The last man that drowned did so because he kept giving his spot on the pickup line to other passengers and at the end he didn’t have the strength to put the line around himself and just went under the water. He was a true hero as well as the guy who jumped into the river and rescued the lady. Brave souls that day.

I remember this tragedy. The airliner took off in known icing conditions. I remember watching the rescue efforts on tv. That brave helicopter pilot plucking out survivors out of the icy Potomac River. Also remember watching that brave pedestrian jump into the icy river to save that lady when he realized she was too weak to hold on to that life preserver. That helicopter pilot and that brave pedestrian were heros that day.

Saving that woman who was blinded by fuel, and was losing her fight. Made me cry. That man just jumped in. A true hero.

Was this the crash where one man in the water saved multiple people until he couldnt hold on long enough to be rescued himself? 😢 It was so sad to watch that. RIP, hero

My brother was working rescue that day. He never really got over what he saw, we talked about it a lot. I was a flight attendant on another airline. 😔

If memory serves correctly, one of the survivors spoke of a male passenger who ushered others out an opening as the plane was taking on water that took that man down

I remember because I was working in DC and living in MD. My mom had just crossed the bridge twice to take my cousin to the airport. I left work at 3:00 pm but didn't get home till after 7:00 pm because of the stalled buses due to super icy roads. My mother was hysterical and I didn't quite understand until I got home and saw the events on the news!!! May God forever bless the guy who jumped in the water to save woman who had lost her glasses and was blinded by plane fuel!!!

I’ve been flying for almost 40 years. The last 20 as an airline pilot. Also an instructor. I’m convinced that if they had just gone to max power (levers all the way forward) they may have saved it. Poor training on so many levels. I remember watching this on live TV.
RIP

I was in the USN and stationed at the National naval Medical Center at the time. It was such a cold cold day I remember being in the barracks watching this unfold on live TV and it was just horrible. Icy snowy windy day.

As a Norwegian, I recall this vividly, because on of the passengers was a very famous Norwegian violinist! He had been performing in USA

I was working for a company that had me traveling one week per month. It was winter in NY area, i was taking a very early flight back to CA. It was still dark and freezing. The pilot and copilot were by my isle looking through the window, checking the wings after de-icing. One of them said “I think we are ok” and we took off. After that day I make sure that when returning from the north-east I would book afternoon flights. Forget about getting home early, just get home.
