Call of Duty World at War is a BRUTAL game. It was probably my favorite game in the franchise for a long time - the campaign is vast and super memorable, and we get introduced to characters like Reznov! There are a few moments in the game where they allow you to make choices - but they aren't choices like in games today where they really hit you over the head with "hey make a choice!". Anyway- the choices don't really have any long lasting consequences...at least they dont seem like it until the very last mission, Chernov was writing about you in his diary the whole time - and you can hear what he wrote about you based on your actions.

About Call of Duty World at War:
Call of Duty: World at War is a 2008 first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. Call of Duty World at War was released for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 in November 2008. Call of Duty World at War is the fifth main installment of the Call of Duty series and returns the setting to World War II. Call of Duty World at War is also the first title in the Black Ops story line. World at War received ports featuring different storyline versions, while remaining in the World War II setting, for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2. Call of Duty World at War was the first game in the series to feature the zombies mode featured in later sequels. A Windows Mobile version of Call of Duty World at War was also made available by Glu Mobile.

The narrative for the Call of Duty World at War campaign mode focuses on the Pacific and Eastern Front theaters of World War II, involving the United States, Empire of Japan, Soviet Union, and Germany. Call of Duty World at War is told from the perspectives of Marine Raider Private C. Miller, US Navy Petty Officer Locke and Red Army soldier Private Dimitri Petrenko, and is based on several historical battles. The Call of Duty World at War multiplayer component of the game contains various game modes and a leveling system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons and rewards as they progress, similar to Call of Duty 4 and repeated in many following Call of Duty entries. Vehicles, in the form of tanks, that players can control appear on certain multiplayer maps. Call of Duty World at War also contains downloadable content called "map packs", which can be purchased online. A new feature to the series was the addition of a cooperative mode, which supports up to two players locally and four players online, as well as the introduction of the Zombies mode.

Really cool to see the "early stages" of decisions in campaigns, this ultimately led to the branching narrative in Black Ops 2. Leave a comment if you think Morality Systems should return in COD Campaigns!

Legend has it that if you combine all the characters' depth in vanguard, they still wouldn't match Chernov's character depth

I got the bad one because I wanted to impress Reznov.

Chernov and Reznov are the Angel and Devil for the player.

They didn’t like each other and Reznov mocked him for writing a diary. But when Chernov died Reznov saves his diary and says “someone should read this”, showing that Reznov had respected him the whole time.

Game came out in 2008 and am now learning this…
Wow it really was ahead of its time. Thank you Treyarch for giving us such a realistic and brutal honest depiction of WW2

All of this for Dimitri to die in an absolutely attrocious way.

I knew about the morality system for years, but try as I might throughout the missions to earn Chernov's approval in the ending I never really could. The best I could achieve was Neutral, not knowing that distracting the Germans in Vendetta was also key

I love how WAW lets you to be as brutal as you can to the enemies. After all, you are playing as an average soldier whose home country had been invaded and thousands of their people murdered by the invaders.

Dmitri fought the war from 1942-1945. Participated in battles like Stalingrad, Seelow heights and Berlin. But he still didn't get a promotion to Corporal.

Chernov’s tone also changes when he says “Someone we should all aspire to be like” in the good dialogue, his tone is normal in the bad dialogue, he sounds quite ashamed of his actions and in the neutral dialogue, his tone is like agreeing but also disapproving of his actions

"It has a hidden morality system that the game actually hides from you."
Ah yes, the hidden here is made out of hidden.

That’s crazy man. I discovered this on my last play through about two-three years ago. The first COD to give you any choice in the story, but it’s so subtle it’s easily missed. World at War and the original Black Ops will always be my favorite campaigns.

I was a little confused with the first one. I always thought it was a mercy kill to shoot them as opposed to letting them slowly bleed to death. Guess I was wrong

I remember getting the neutral dialogue when I first played it and still find it the most profound of the three to this day.

I was aware of the morality system but never knew Vendetta affected it so always got at best neutral. Nice to have it finally cracked - now I wonder about the speech Reznov gives in one of the trailers and if it's ever accessible in game...
