I would have loved a book like this as a kid, and that hooters story is great. The Kalevala was influential for Tolkein, so not surprised a D&D book would include it.

The comment about being unable to form an attachment as a kid to figures because of their names is interesting. I encountered mythology largely through video games, so if the game didn't say the name for me I would mangle the pronounciation without fear of being wrong. The celtic & irish figures were the ones I never got right, Cú Chulainn I would say something like "Coo Choo-layne" but it's supposed to be like "Koo-ka-hoo-lyn" or "Koo-hoo-lane". Mesoamerican gods I thought had cool names because they used a lot of X's. Japanese names I got down pretty easily but Chinese ones with their T/S/Z sounds I had wrong for a long time.

One day I would like to read the Lovecraft and Elric stories, just so much to get through in my backlog already. If you want to learn more about Norse Mythology, I recommend Jackson Crawford's channel. He has a video on Loki that explains which aspects of his popular characterization are based on D&D's influence and how they compare to modern scholarship.

Nice video, you really capture the breathless nostalgia that I feel too. I've been re-buying my old D&D books on eBay and just bought Deities & Demigods, and after watching this I can't wait for it to arrive.

I like non comic stuff as well. People can choose to watch videos or not so mix it up! Also, a show on Netflix that isn't horrible called Ragnarok you might like. Its weird but ok.
