The 77’ 318 was so throttled by emissions controls that I don’t see how it could ever perform to its potential. I loved the 318 in the late 60s and early 70s. You could beat on them all day long and they would still run forever.

Drop in an old MP distributor in for the race. If you're after off the line pick up. That'll do it, even with just the BBD Carter.

Decades ago my Dad wanted to trounce his buddy's 4 door 305 Cutlass, with Dad's 318 Fifth Avenue.

Pretty sure it would have anyway, but I tossed in the MP distributor, tuned it in and he murdered the gutless Gutless with Chrysler's mid sized luxury barge, on the day of the showdown.
I had massive torque and throttle response gains using those torque plus "screened" intake gaskets on 360s too. They allow you to lean out the idle mixture and still deliver the goods(and then some), giving mileage improvements too. Damned shame they stopped manufacturing them. The added bonus was with them being double thickness gaskets you could use that warped intake and they'd still seal perfectly.

had 75 dodge van with a 318, 2barrel holly and headers with dual exhaust. got 20mpg at 55mph back in the carter

Would advancing the cam 4* improve mpg, vacuum, and low end torque? (Your chain is probably stretched).
I advanced my .440” - 260* cam in my 360 ram charger (pushes a lot of air). and now getting 15 mpg.
Fires right up, runs @600rpm w 19” of vac.
Also set total timing to 34* w initial at 14* w FABO plate.
W edelbrock 600 cfm 4bbl w 1 jet size down @ cruise rod.
Vac advance pulls in at 14”.

A friend of my Dad's, who owned a machine shop said.
The 318 block is so thick and strong . They can freeze block solid in cold temps and the block will not bust .
I said is that true?
He said, have ever seen a 318 freeze and bust ....no l have not .

Sounds just like my 85 ram 318 2bbl holley. Nothing but fan and intake noise lol. I think mine has a bad accelerator pump. If I wack the gas it will bog then go. Swapping out to a 4bbl soon but will keep that 2280 and intake for spare parts

Scored an SP2P intake yesterday for the W250's 318. Been itching to find out if those "gas mileage" intakes really work. Runners are tiny especially compared to the 68 340 intake on it now.

my thoughts are as follows, if you like off the shelf combos
a 360 2 bbl intake and some port matching along with a big rochestor 2bbl carb.
i think thatll be where you want to be, seat of pants feeling.
bit of work on the heads yes but well worth it when it can Breath.
yes, i realize thats a gm carb...its a carb, it works better than that tiny one there....lol, cheers.
