Prolonged state of unconsciousness is called coma. During coma a person is not responsible for external stimuli even it is a painful stimuli he will not respond. Brain and brainstem are responsible for maintenance of consciousness, if there is an insult to this person gets coma. The causes for this are in more than 50% of cases this is due to the injury to the brain or brain stroke, the severe on is damage to the brain or brainstem. In brain stroke either they decrease circulation or increase the hemorrhage within the brain is responsible for coma. The other causes responsible for this condition are hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia which are seen in diabetes mellitus, the accumulation of toxins in body and brain like in case of liver failure there will be accumulation of anemia, in kidney failure there will be accumulation urea, in severe asthma there will be accumulation carbon dioxide. Neuro infection is another cause, in this it may be a meningitis or encephalitis or minigore encephalitis, hypoxia deprivation of oxygen to the brain is responsible for coma, it is seen in case of cardiac arrest, in case of severe asthma and also in case of drowning. And other conditions which are responsible for coma are sedative over dosage, if person takes the medication for sleep if they take too much of a tablet that least to prolonged coma. Generalized seizures which is also responsible for unconsciousness, the coma maybe a temporary or it may be a permanent One that depends upon the amount of insult the brain and brainstem and the underlying cause. If there is a less insult to the brain or brainstem if you treat the underlying call patient will revert back to the normal condition, if insult is too much and it is damaging the brain and brainstem that leads to brain death that is the death of the person.
