The best rooster I've had wandered in our yard and stayed for about 10 years. He was multi colored and I was never sure what breed he was. But he was wonderful, we could walk anywhere in the yard and he never bothered anyone. Never aggressive toward people of any age. He fought many fights for his girls. He taught other young roosters how to behave. His last fight we found him in the yard and got ready to bury him when he moved! It took several days for Bob to gt around again but he recovered. He was left with a limp and looking awfully beat up but lived several more months. I hate that he past. I don't ever think I'll find another as good as our Bob.

I’ve had a Rhode Island Red rooster, Light Sussex rooster and Welsummer rooster over the years and they’re very protective of their hens and good roosters.

My main rooster is a black Australorp. Hes been the absolute best at managing his flock. He tends to keep his distance when we enter the pen its true, but its awesome to see how he watches over the hens at all times even during feeding times.

I’m surprised Marans roosters didn’t get a mention. We have a black copper maran rooster at work. He’s so gentle, leads his ladies around to food, waits until they’ve had a go before he has some, waits outside the coop when they’re laying etc. The only time I’ve seen him get feisty was when someone’s off lead dog tried to chase the hens and he soon saw to it. Feels bad we called him Hugh after Hugh Hefner 😅

I had aggressive and large Australorp rooster. He was very bully to all birds, and when he attacked muscovy drake, muscovy drake beat the shit out of him. Since that fight, rooster was avoiding muscovy drake in large circle

My roosters were all hatched and raised by incredible grandmother hens. All were powerful, incredibly protective and polite. two were martyred in battle protecting their hens, ensured no hen was taken by foxes. They will forever rest in the halls of the great mother.

I don't recommend the Barred Plymouth Rock rooster. Once mature, they take their jobs a bit too seriously, which don't get me wrong-that part is truly appreciated. The coloring def helps them hide from predators It's the aggressiveness with humans that's the issue. Ours was raised around people, held, loved, had freedom to run but once he turned 2 years old, he's been nothing but a holy terror.

I ordered a Salmon Faverolles roo. Can't wait to raise a new dude for the flock and I'm hopeful he'll be enough to protect against predators, but not take the job so seriously that he wants to bite the hands that feed him or flog us to death

Don't get Jersey Giant roosters. I had several of them, one was attackingme when I was feeding them, and he never protected his ladies. We actually lost two chickens during his short reign (we made him soup) and I saw him hitting the chickens also, he was a bully.
The best rooster we had was a silver wayandotte, who actually sacrificed himself for his ladies fighting a hawk to the death, poor thing. I still miss his loving behavior towards his ladies, he always called them towards him offered them worms and protecting them with his life. 😢

I have had two barred rock roosters; Roo and Roo2. Very good birds, protective. Roo2 would chase cats and small dogs away.
