Hey guys, I just bought this house last year and decided to upgrade it by running ethernet cables through the whole house.

The house is a 2 story with about 2900 sq ft. I decided to go with all Ubiquiti gear and I am super happy with how it all turned out.

Let me know if you have my questions or tips to improve my network.

Thanks!

Gear:
Unifi UDM PRO
Unifi USW PRO 24 port NON-POE
Unifi US-8 Switch 8
2 Unifi NanoHd Access points
DAC SFP+ 10 Gbps cable -

Great video, I always enjoy watching other people's setups. I finished setting up a network rack with UDMP, 24 PoE switch, cameras and 2 APs. My home is about 2800 sq ft. If you've made any changes to your setup from last year it would be nice to see. I read someone's comment here, Ubiquiti is made by amateurs built for Amateurs, I beg to differ on that. I'm by no means an amateur since I work on this for a living. There are many experts that use and prefer to use Ubiquiti so i don't know what he's talking about. This is great for small busineses and home beginners and advanced users equal.

One thing that I would suggest is with the PoE injectors I would either have a 1/2 rack shelf mounted in the back to lay them on after the patch panel where 1 they are not seen at all and 2 where it takes the strain off the connector on the Unifi Switch. This way it provides cleaner install look up front and takes that stress of to prevent cable from possible breaking. Plus then you can use velcro to secure the stuff to the shelf also possible depending on placement use the other side to route cables using velcro. Remember using velcro in cable management makes adding or replacing cables easier

You definitely should have a POE switch... with all this expense and to not get a POE switch is such a waste

One other thing for cleaner install look that I did is run my ONT (fiber to Ethernet connect) ethernet to back of patch panel in line with the Ethernet port on UDM then short patch cable to UDM. Did not lose any speed. Once I get my Unifi Switch I think I am going to put my patch panel between the UDM and switch run the DAC through empty patch panel slots to each so gives the impression of coming from patch panel to each also one simple patch to UDM for ethernet. then rest of connections from patch panel to switch with PoE injector behind the patch panel. I have a picture of mine on my facebook page. If you would like to look. I have not got the Unifi switch yet due to availability. I am just in month 2 of buying Network rack equipment. Yes I am major OCD with it. My instructors in college wear ex military so I am so clean installs where a must.

You should see the wall behind one of my tvs that butts up to a closet on the over side for some reason there are 4 studs with only 4 inches between them made it really hard to run that cable down. will have to do some patching once I get everything done. Good thing I am in process of also taking out the 1980's wall paper and texture painting.

NIce I plan to have a layout just like yours. The only difference is I will be running cat6e for all my device to connect. Like my TV's computer and any other devices I might need. The wifi for me will be for our phones, and laptop, iPad and so on. I will for sure create a guess network. The only thing I do have a question you said "Persona device" were you talking about your phone and laptop?

On a different topic, uninsulated foundation will rob you of heat/AC at a level you would not believe. The foundation will basically act like a huge heat sink to the outside. Consider 2” rigid insulation and when you ready, just install your wall inside that layer. The rigid and other insulated walls again exterior concrete walls will pay for themselves in 1.5 to 3 years in saved energy cost, depending on where you live.

Nice setup! One thing I would probably do different would be connecting everything to the 24 pro switch directly avoiding the 8 port switch. But the performance difference is probably negligible, not really sure about that... and the AP placed sideways is for distance so it would be better on one side of the room, or on the ceiling in the middle facing down, but has you said its temporary.

Mount your accesspoint horizontal not vertical. They are not designed that way

you can legally run cable through heater ducts. but the cable must be plenum rated cat.

Great video, thanks for sharing! My gut feeling suggests that Cat6A probably made things more awkward then they needed to be, I cant see any particularly long cable runs and your home environment isnt likely to be susceptible to noise or interference like it would in an industrial environment, Cat6 would likely have been a lot easier to install.

split your IoT broadcast such as IOT up with upstair devices, Iot down with basement devices. Your manin LAN wifi should be free to roam so have those on both....

there are different cable ratings for different environments. you can technically run your cable through your ventilation system, its done a lot, actually, though typically on the air return. its called a plenum, and many offices use the space above the ceilings use that space as an air return as well

Can you add links to your rack and 10gb sfp+ dac cable? I am just starting to piece together my Unifi network and a switch and rack are coming up on my shopping list soon. Thanks!

I have to say that the rack is already looking a little so small. All that Space and you went with something small. I would have gotten at least an 18U or something. You think you have enough and then you want to add this and that and now you're out of space. I started out with a couple shelves in my small closet. It's a narrow closet with a narrow door. So my Network stuff was like that for a couple years. Then I wanted to upgrade and so got a 4U rack, and before I even installed it, I was going no way, it's just way too small. So I got an 8U Rack. That is what I currently have. But I needed to update my 48 port Switch, my ASUS Wifi Router is getter pretty OLD. It was a free one from T-Mobile, but because of that, it doesn't get any firmware updates as the normal ASUS router does.

I also have 600Mbps Download Internet now, though I'm only getting around 350Mbps wired currently. Not sure what the issue is. Is it my hardware or Comcast? So I want to upgrade again with a larger rack. So now I'm looking for the right 12U Rack. It is a closet so I still want to be able to store stuff in there and hang jackets. I'm also moving to Unifi. My Unifi 48 Port Switch is currently being used. I got that used. I just got the UniFi Cloud Key Gen2, also USED. and got that running in my computer room temp, but that will be mounted in the RACK when the Unifi rackmount I got for it, also USED. I have a NEW Gateway/Router that I paid a lot for that they don't sell to the general public yet, it's early access. So I can't name it. You can figure it out. I have 1 new Wifi 6 Lite AP and a Power Injector for that. My switch is not POE. POE switches are generally too deep to fit in my Rack. So really only needed 1 POE port for now. I may get a second AP later. I will say that my new Gateway/Router came with a 10GB SPF+ cable!!! I had ordered one as I didn't know that, and I opened the Box and WOW, there is one in the box already. Oh well, I have a spare for the future. I have some ideas for that. No rush!!!

I have an idea of the rack I want to get. It's 12U and the depth is adjustable. my current one is 14" deep. I could go maybe 15-16" deep MAX. Remember I'm in a closet with limited space I need to be able to work on it and as of now, I can squeeze in to do things. Man, if I had all that space this person does, Big 18U or something. Room to breathe. I almost want to get a 15U, but it's just too much space being taken up. Anyone has ideas on a Rack, 12U in the 14-16" deep range, let me know.

Ubiquiti: built by amateurs...for amateurs. Want security? Try Juniper or Fortinet. Even SonicWALL might be better.
