Wrong, you don't need to eat all that much if you are exercising at the right intensity/duration. Longer zone 2 rides you're essentially burning fat, so if you eat a proper breakfast before you can ride a century on water alone. If what you are after is a hard high intensity interval session, you can't sustain that intensity for very long, and you can't empty the tank either (say, 1h30, or maybe 2h if you want to extend your recovery time). The only instance where you might bonk is if you go long and moderately hard, and in this instance yes you need to eat, and in this case you end up home with heavy legs because you've burnt all your glycogen reserves. But that being said always bring food with you in case something happens, or if one of your friends bonks. Also remember all that stuff is very sugary, your dentist will love you if you eat that too often. Also don't restrict your calorie intake during the day, if you're hungry that's probably because your body's asking for it, but then you can eat good quality food.
