A massive blaze raged through a retail complex with 3,000 shops in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on April 4, 2023. There were no immediate reports of casualties but almost all shops were destroyed. Bongo Bazar market is popular among bargain shoppers looking for Western fashion brands. The market sells clothes produced in the city’s textile factories that have failed export-standard checks. The blaze broke out just ahead of Eid, the biggest Muslim festival in the country.

For people outside BD who are new to this story; this entire place didn't have a single fire safety equipment. The fire service company has been warning them for years to bring in safety equipment to prevent a tragedy like this one. He even appeared on the news yesterday saying the 10th warning was issued just months ago that this building is not safe in any way. No one paid attention because here people really think they are immune to tragedies. These are preventable tragedies. Business owners just want to earn profits and they will bribe their way to operate in these risky buildings and areas. Also, this is the 3rd fire related incident in dhaka in 2023. All, preventable.

এটা খুবই দুঃখজনক ঘটনা। আমাদের হাজার কোটি টাকার ক্ষতি হয়ে গেল। ব্যাবসায়ীদের আরো সতর্ক হওয়া উচিত

Wow, sad for this to happen. Doesn’t sound like many of these people have commercial insurance to cover for this type of loss. Shows people are running businesses merely scraping by just to keep their heads afloat. A disaster like this could certainly put a person on the streets. Hoping the government sends some form of assistance for these people.
