The “Rent-a-Racer” program provided by Shelby and Hertz was a promotional idea to get the Shelby Mustang in the hands of car enthusiasts to really show off the cars potential. It worked, almost too well!! The stories are still rampant about cars being rented on Friday, having their engines used in personal race cars, the Shelby’s themselves having full roll cages installed for the weekend for racing, and people replacing the Hi-Po Shelby engine for a generic Ford 289 4 barrel and returning it to Hertz!!!

This 1966 Shelby GT350H was shipped to S & C Motors Inc. in San Francisco, California in May of 1966 to be prepared prior to delivery to Hertz. This new Shelby was invoiced to Hertz for $3,547 plus $105.55 for chrome Magnum wheels, $45.45 for Radio, $20 pre-delivery charge and $141.75 for freight for a grand total of $3,859.75. By 1967, its time was done in the rental fleet and it was sold to its first private owner who lived in California. It changed hands a few more times after that all while remaining in the state where it was sold new. Under previous ownership, it underwent a rotisserie restoration finished in its original color combination of Black with Gold stripes. The engine was removed and sent out to rebuilt during the restoration and the transmission was upgraded to a 4 speed. The engine compartment is detailed nicely with correct decals and paint finishes. The undercarriage is finished in red oxide primer with color overspray and inspection markings. Documenting this beautiful Hertz Shelby includes SAAC serial number verification, Shelby invoices, restoration receipts, registration documents, owner’s manual, as well as being listed in the Shelby registry.

This Shelby is a great example of the rare and unique Rent a Racer version of the famous GT350H. From a $17/day rental to a desirable collector car, great history, special features and Shelby pedigree make this a great GT350H for the discerning collector or Shelby Enthusiast.

I rented one in San Diego on June 23, 1966, and I was 19 years old. I street raced stop light to stop light, and when I pulled into my folks driveway the brakes failed. The front caliper piston overheated and no brakes! I was off to USMC boot camp the next day, June 24, 1966, so Hertz towed the car away and waived the $17.00 rental fee. When I returned home from Vietnam I bought a ‘68 Roadrunner for $2, 900. My first choice was a’68 Mustang 390/4 speed, but it was about $3, 500.

This was a great concept, sadly, some people really abused the cars & canibalized many major components!!! Thanks for the review of this rare beauty!!! 👍👍

rented one back then... Hertz sent out a ‘thank you’ glass.... didn’t like the upward angle to sight road so never followed through with a purchase.

The actor James Garner drove one of these GT350Hs in the '66 movie Grand Prix. Garner expertly throttled and shifted the GT seamlessly while he streaked through the French countryside in the unique car, with actress Jessica Walter as his scared, half-willing passenger (she was the flirty wife of another driver). Totally worth watching just to see the GT burbling and rumbling, if not the competition racing in the rest of the film.

Great Example, If i Remember Correctly Hertz got Something Like Little Over 150 4 Spds.& Renters Abused The Cluthes So Bad So Bad, Hertz Told Shelby to STOP Sending Anymore 4 Spds, Because of Wear & Tear & Replacement of the Culches.Lol😊😮

In 2021, that's $147 a day and $1.48 a mile.... Never forget inflation.

None of the modern Hertz specials hold a candle to the original. Not necessarily because modern Mustangs are always worse or less special than classics, but because the modern Hertz Shelby's are normal GT's with some extra badging, and maybe an exhaust upgrade. If you could actually rent a modern day GT500 or GT350 through Hertz....that would be incredible. Nowadays that's Turo or Driveshare's business.

So...totally random question: were you still required to be 25 years old n order to rent a car back in 1966?? I hear him say that almost at the end and was just curious. Just thought that rule came about several years later.

It does NOT make any sense for a nice old muscle car to cost only $17... 🤯
