I have a PhD in Food Science and about 10 year of exposure to the field. The jobs listed here were not really accurate. Normally Food Science majors move into 4 different spaces. 1) Product developer=creating brand new food products for the industry and scaling them up 2) Research and development=understanding the behavior of food ingredients in products/physical behavior (need a PhD or masters) 3) Quality control=making sure food is safe to consume 4) Technical sales=understanding the behavior of food ingredients or flavors and selling them to companies who make food products. The food industry is moving more towards healthier and plant based products at the moment. Its a really exciting time to be in Food Science because we are creating a healthier and more sustainable food system. The demand for the jobs is pretty high but I would say sometimes you might need to be flexible on location. I have seen people from Food Science into pharmaceuticals/personal care products. I would not say that its so narrow but I guess I am bias. Personally I love food and chemistry and for me I could imagine doing anything else.

So, I have a Bachelor's in Dietetics, and I actually got a bachelor's in Food Science and Technology also. Personally working as an Admin of a dietary dpt, I haven't used the things I learned in my food science classes. BUT, working 1 on 1 with private clients to get them healthy with Personalized menus and diet plans, I use knowledge from the food science classes more than my Dietetics classes!

To get into the six figure range in food science you will either need to do postgraduate study or you build up your experience to get into corporate.

Food Science has to be the most exciting thing ever. I mean philosophically speaking, scaling delicious flavor to the world given there is so much room for discovery, is perhaps the most noblest thing ever.

Hi 👋🏼 I’m wondering, after watching some of your videos, where would you rank a health science ( nutrition and exercise) degree or pharmacy Assistant certification ?!
Thank you for making these informative videos ✨

Clicking this video was so stressful because I'm taking a food science major

Update: I'm in my 2nd year doing a Bachelor of Food Science (Honours) and majoring in Food Technology :))

Have been following this channel for a while and these videos are extremely helpful. Sadly they don't get as many views as they deserve :(

Im a fermentation microbiology major ( a more niche food science degree)

Intresting enough theres actually a lot of demand in oil production and many processing plants for ferm/ food science majors (that also pay exceedingly well) especially if you already have a background in industrial systems. That is increadibly niche though.

While shanes methedology is usually right for more rigid STEM degrees, food science as a whole is increadibly flexible especially if you have a more niche offshoot that allows it to be

Hey Shane I have an unrelated question, I’ve been considering majoring in marketing but there’s not much colleges with it where I live. I’ve only found one business school with that and all of the other courses are inserted in communication schools.
Do you think there is a different in after college expectations depending if you come from a business or communication school?

The course are a bit different too in the business it’s “managing of marketing” so you have classes like accountability etc and the other is “marketing and publicity”

this is just a small comment from a Japanese viewer! just thought i could help out with your pronounciation of ikigai, usually in japanese when u see an "i" in a word its pronounced with an "ee' sound, unless its after an "a" ("ai") it sounds more like "I/eye". so ikigai is pronounced ee-kee-guy

I am a food technology graduate currently taking up my masters in Food Science. The reason why I am taking my master’s degree is because I want to conduct further research on enzymes and plant proteins. It’s a good degree if you want unlimited supply of food to taste especially if you’re in a manufacturing company. I remember having to eat a lot of burgers, hotdogs, and bacon because I was employed in a meat manufacturing company (I was part of the R&D team). Hahaha tho’ I quite agree that it is a narrow skill set compared to other courses and salary is quite shitty unless you have the experience or a Masters or PhD for career advancement. Anyways, take it if you love food and the science behind or if you love to educate or even be a smarty pants in checking nutritional labels and regulatory requirements. Hahahaha

Shane! Please make a video about if you recommend becoming a CRNA or not! It’s super high pay but it takes upwards of 8 years to accomplish (2 years of work experience during the timeframe) it would really help!!!!

Can you please put the sources'/proofs' links you use to make videos in the description? That would be very helpful. And also your content would look more expert in the eyes of evil algorithms xD

i used to work in food industry. One thing I gotta say is... it doesnt offer you great career option if you dont have master/doc degree. Basically a lot of colleagues regret getting into food major. Most of food tech/sci jobs require lots and lots of labor and they give out small payments. Be happy if u get over minimum wage.
+) btw i graduated from national university with food science degree along with food engineering degree.
