Lyrics:
Well grey clouds wrapped round the town like elastic
Cars stood like toys made of Taiwanese plastic
The boy laughed and danced around in the rain
While launderettes cleaned clothes high heels rubbed toes
Puddles splashed huddles of bus stop crows
Dressed in their suits and their boots well they all look the same

I took myself down to the cafe to find all the boys lost in books and crackling vinyl
And carved out a poem above the urinal that read
Don't you cry for the lost
Smile for the living
Get what you need and give what you're given
Life's for the living so live it
Or you're better off dead

While the evening pulled the moon out of it's packet
Stars shone like buttons on an old man's jacket
We needed a nail but we tacked it 'til it fell of the wall
Yeah while pigeon's pecked drains, sparks flew like planes
The rain showed the rainbows in the oil stainsAnd we all had new iPhones but no one had no one to call
And i stumbled down to the stomach of the town
Where the widow takes memories to slowly drown
With a hand to the sky and a mist in her eye she said
Don't you cry for the lost
Smile for the living
Get what you need and give what you're given
Yeah life's for the living so live it
Or you're better off dead
Or you’re better off dead
Well i'm sick of this town, this blind man's forage
They take your dreams down and they stick them in storage
You can have them back son when you've paid off your mortgage and loans
Oh hell with this place, i'll go it my own way
I'll stick out my thumb and i trudge down the highway
Someday someone must be going my way home

‘Till then i’ll make my bed from a disused car
With a mattress of leaves and a blanket of stars
And i’ll stitch the words into my heart with a needle and thread
Don't you cry for the lost
Smile for the living
Get what you need and give what you're given
Yeah life's for the living so live it
Or you're better off dead
So don’t cry for the lost
Smile for the living
Get what you need and give what you're given
Life's for the living so live it
Or you're better off dead

Don’t you cry for the lost
Smile for the living
Get what you need and give what you're given
Life's for the living so live it
Or you're better off dead

I remember listening to this song about 10 years ago for the very first time. I was so young and hadn't experienced a bit of life yet. It was significant to me then...but I understand the lyrics and meaning behind the song so much better now. I'm not sure if I should be mourning the loss of my innocence or celebrating the expance of my experience. Maybe just a little of both. Thank you Mike and Foy for breathing such a renewed life into this song!

“When we all had new iPhones, but no one had no one to call…” brilliant & pertinent.

“Don't you cry for the lost,
smile for the living.
Get what you need and give what you're given.
Life's for the living so live it,
or you're better off dead” ❤

Listened to this song many times going to school when I was 16. Now I'm 26, released my first EP this morning and leaving France for Australia in 3 days, with no friend, no home, and no job waiting for me. All the Little Lights is a classic for me, I'm sure it inspired me to go it my own way years after ❤️

I used to listen to this song so much, learned it on acoustic and used to play it all the time. I got diagnosed last year with cancer and listening to this song again today means a whole lot more now.

This song helped me tremendously when I moved to the US from Chile. New start, New beginning, new people, new friends and the sadness of leaving my family behind. ...So, don't cry for the lost, smile for the living, get what you need and give what you're given, life's for the living so live it, or you better off dead... Thank you Mike, you're by far my favorite artist of the last 10 years. Cheers 🍻

I remember chasing my dreams, which entailed migrating from my home country to England in search of a quality education and an improved life. Within the days leading to my travel, I abruptly began feeling nostalgic, Mike's songs got me through, even in the hardeest moments. The most awe-inspiring of songs was "Riding to New York". I remember listening to it as I trudge down the road leading to the library!
Today, I am a Master's Degree holder in Mechanical Engineering, and a first year PhD student at the University of Bolton, Greater Manchester. Thank you Mike for you soul-lifting music!

Passenger has maintained his sound for the past many years. Every instrument still sounds the same: the drums, strings, etc. It's too beautiful to behold. Cheers, Champ

We‘ve played this song 10 years ago at our dad‘s funeral. Heard this album at his last hours. Always in our hearts and never forget this music. Means so much.

Never thought a Passenger song could sound better but adding Foy to it gives it a grittier feel that I really love

Back in 2014 my 22 y.o. best friend passed away. I was far from home studying in Edinburgh and it was a tough time for me. Mike did some of his busking/street concerts on the royal mile amb for the first time I heard his music. His music has always resonated with me since then. This album is my favourite and helped me smile a lot back then.

When I first listened to Mike, I remember I was filled with goosebumps. He has got that angelic voice, his lyrics, and everything together makes him a great person. His songs are like a Poem to me. It makes me miss my literature classes back in school. Much much love from Ghana 🇬🇭

I was 13 the first time I heard this song, now I'm 20 and its one of the songs that have gotten me through the most difficult times. Never would have been alive today if it weren't for Mike's music.

I've always known Passenger for "let her go", then I heard this song at the height of the pandemic and I was blown away...
It touched me in a way that I can't describe. This man is gifted and deserves all the flowers he's getting. Thank you Mike
