A rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) is a shoulder-fired weapon that launches rockets with explosive warheads. RPGs are often used as anti-tank weapons and can be carried by a single soldier. The warheads are attached to a rocket motor that propels the RPG towards its target, and fins stabilize the rocket during flight. Some RPGs can be reloaded with new grenades, while others are single-use. Here's how an RPG works: The RPG is loaded into the launcher so that it lines up with the trigger mechanism. The operator pulls the trigger, which fires a gunpowder booster charge that gives the rocket an initial speed of 115 m/s (380 ft/s). As the rocket emerges from the tube, fins deploy to stabilize the rocket and help it travel a long distance.The rocket motor ignites after 10 m (33 ft) and sustains flight out to 500 m (1, 600 ft) at a maximum velocity of 295 m/s (970 ft/s).
