Building a Forgotten Mazda RX7 EP. 5 Painting using Subaru Colors

Huge steps on the 1993 Mazda RX7 today, finally getting some paint onto this car. This is my first time painting with an actual legit set up so I do not have any experience going into this. But if I can figure it out anyone can do it. we are painting the RX7 Aspen white from Subaru (Paint Code 51E). Using white should make painting a little bit easier as it is typically an easier color to paint. But the results came out AMAZING on this!

Next episode: So I decided to paint the body. 👀.
If so, I believe in you! 👏

2:30 my guy you never cease to amaze me, picking up proper body practices is not easy. When you said if you think it’s clean, it’s not… that is a rule to live by when prepping for any paint work, but the way you handled the underside and undercoating was amazing. You just learn more and more and more, I was a A.S.E. certified paint and refinish person many years ago. It was of course before YouTube but damn man you are like a sponge, you watch and learn and then do it just as well. I hope this project turns out the way I hope and believe you can do to it, just take your time and make it right the first time. And if not do it again, cause I know you will get it perfect

Love this series, the rx7 is definitely a dream car for a full restoration like this.

When you dropped your bucket from the table I literally just said “he has no counter space!” Right before it happened.

Oh no... not, not this again. 14:30 my entire soul crumbles as I hear the song that has haunted me in YouTube videos since the dark ages. I thought I had escaped, but alas, I have learned there is no escape. And despite this fun video, I am a broken man.

BMW fanboy here, I would've went Alpine White, but that Aspen White looks so good! I don't think it's your first time painting.. Came out 10x better than you probably expected, tackle the body yourself! Learning quick with small mistakes you made in the engine bay, and you have the whole interior to catch on with too! You got this, it's lookin fire so far!!! The extra bit of clear coat is good for full deep paint correction, will leave it with tons of life left to it!

Good choice on going with the Aspen White. If you still want a little bit of that metallic look you can always add some flakes. Although that does add to the complexity for getting the paint to lay down evenly across the whole surface.

You totally got this man, dont overthink it too much! A couple of things, the green painters tape sticks alot better than the blue, if you do decide to paint it yourself DA the body with 600 grit you dont need to go any more abrasive than that since the factory paint is really good condition. Reminder that plastic will almost never match with the rest of the car, it may turn out a little lighter or darker and if you want to do some test panels be very mindful of the layers and gun settings. Its always recommended to paint it all once to make sure everything is cohesive but sometimes you cant. Bake time is major, you dont have an actual paint booth so get a few heaters in there to make sure it all cures evenly. Everything else I feel like you can figure out on your own if you havent already, just to throw my opinion in, to save a little bit of time and money not every surface needs to be clear coated, especially parts you wont see you can do just a base coat on the interior and some of the structural parts that are covered up by the body panels!

I think this is my favorite build right now. You should definitely paint your own car. The six P's Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Stoked on this dude, your channel is gonna blow up with content like this.

Nicely done Tanner! That has to feel so good to accomplish something like that for the first time.
