Hi, Well I did not have to rely on those ugly huge cars on the islands this past trip (April, May 2021). Instead, I got a personal driver for Maui (local) and I rode my bike around Oahu and enjoyed that island while getting back into shape(which I'm falling out of shape now that I am home again). The automobile situation on the islands is pretty bad. On top of this, there is no (limited) infrastructure to separate bicycles from cars. Also, automobile drivers have no respect for pedestrians or bicyclists. I know this because, for the month of May, I rode over 800 miles on the roads of Oahu and Maui. Most drivers take care. But there is a limited number of drivers who run people off the road, including me. Local residents are begging drivers to keep their distance and operate vehicles at a respectful speed. As a cyclist, Oahu is off-limits for any time of series long-distance riding. Locals do not want to see bicycles. I got kicked out of an outdoor mall just having my bicycle in hand walking it ( no signs). They see it as a low-class thing to do; riding a bicycle is a status that you are poor. If possible, get yourself a person who lives on the islands to take you around. Besides, it is money well spent. No middle-person, you get right down to the community.
