Mass evacuation in Canada! Floods in Merritt, British Columbia
The flooding forced the entire Merritt, British Columbia community to evacuate. In the morning, the city announced that evacuation order had been issued.
The flood waters have inundated two bridges across the Coldwater River, and flood waters prevent access to the third. The towns of Princeton and Abbotsford are also u nder an evacuation order.
Flooding, mudslides and rockslides have wreaked havoc, closing highways. As many as 100 vehicles were trapped between two landslides on Highway 7 in east of Vancouver. At least 100 000 customers lost power in British Columbia and another 140 000 in neighboring Washington state.
From debris and runoff from a landslide nearly 50 homes were affected in Abbotsford. The Trans-Canada Highway to Alberta, between Revelstoke and Golden, was closed due to flooding.
No dangerous cases with people were recorded associated with the ongoing storms and landslides in the province.
