The Truth About Upgrades

We upgrade the things in our lives for one of three reasons and I’m going to careful with how I phrase these, but it’s either because; We need to, we want to or because we fail to think for ourselves.

In this video I'm walking us through each of these three reasons and providing some context around minimalism and how it intermingles with upgrading, because their relationship isn’t as bad as you may think.

I usually get so much joy from sticking to my phone or laptop for several years without upgrading it!

Thats my biggest problem, always wanting to upgrade. Even if i know that what i want costa much more than what i have its hard to fight that feeling... 😔

I am faced with a similar issue to you! I still use an iPhone 6 but now so many apps won't upgrade or are no longer available, but the phone itself is still in amazing condition! it's such a shame to replace purely because of this planned obsolescence by companies!

I've been struggling with the idea of upgrading to a new car. I already had the money saved, and it was being a recurring thought. Finally, I took all that money and... finished paying the mortage. No new car, but no loans anymore. Really really happy.

Just sold my iPhone 6 which I had for 5+ years. Upgraded to the X because I found a really good deal

I think it helps to add dates to each item as you write it on your wait list. Revisit the item in a month and either decide to buy it, remove it from the list, or keep it and update the date to “check back in” in a month. Keep the list visible so your family members can also add to the list, or remind you that you have the item somewhere you forgot, or to use the list for more practical gift ideas so you get things you really want.

Right now, a lot of people are barely able to pay their rent, and on top of that, their stuck paying for a lifestyle that they could barely support when they were working. Living in Southern California, you see the lifestyle inflation. People spend so much money they don’t have, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people who don’t care. Leaving them broke mentally and physically. My digital hoarding was bad. I used to have every iPod that came out..even tho they all just held music. I had Jordan’s I didn’t wear. When I moved to California and had to sell them, I discovered shoes I never touched since I bought them. It was sadly excessive. Breaking that habit saved me a lot of money which, under the current circumstances, kept me from being broke during this pandemic. Just be grateful for what you have, work with what you got, and save your money for a rainy day that you hope never comes.

Still using an (old-style) iPhone SE. Modern phones are too big. Only reason I'm considering upgrading (to the new SE) is the battery life issue. But my wife cracked the screen on hers (same model) last month, so we'll upgrade hers first. No particular desire to upgrade anything else. A reminder to recycle any old tech after you upgrade, don't just leave it sat in a drawer.

I recently went from 1999 Camry to 2020 because the list of repairs was adding up. This is the first brand new car I've had since 1992 because I don't like taking the appreciation but feel comfortable not having to worry about breaking down or surprise expenses. Put more than 1/2 down so I have a manageable monthly payment with a good interest rate that I will be able to pay off much quicker than the term of the loan.

The wait list has been a total game changer! I realized that I can get by with a lot less than I thought. It’s so great not spending money on unnecessary stuff.

If you are in a position where you need to upgrade / replace due to an issue with the device, see if you can get it repaired first. Even via a third party for older devices rather than the manufacturer who likely will say they can't as it's out of support. Explore your options to repair first before you commit to upgrading. You could save a small fortune.

Only times I've ever paid to upgrade any phone was when there was a need. Cracked screen, full memory or water damage. The last 2 upgrades I've gotten were hand me downs from my husband. My area of concern was always fashion but I've gotten a grip on it finally.

recently got a contract Samsung A10 smartphone which was literally an upgrade for me as i never had a smartphone or i phone. ive always used the basic cheap Nokia phones since my early 20's as i just wanted to text and call. it was time now to upgrade as the buttons on my old Nokia phone were fading away. i think it was all good timing for me as i was already thinking about upgrading. it was also to do with getting out of my comfort zone!

This is an important topic that's really relevant in today's world. When the notif came out for this video, I was pretty surprised because I was actually uploading a similar video about upgrades and minimalism hahaha.
