I’ll always install a ball valve instead of a gate valve for a customer if I have the choice but if they really want a gate valve, they’ll get a gate valve.

Using a gate valve or ballvalve as a metering device.. will wear thrm out.
Though i use ball valves at home, but the use is minimal and i dont expect it to fail for a good 20+ years.

plumbers worst enemy when old and the gate drops its done, not to mention people trying to use as regulating valve so it wears grove in metal and wont shut off

Thank you you just insured that I will be cutting out broken gate valves for the next 15 years. The reason gate valves break when your turning the water back on the difference in pressure on inlet side versus the lack of pressure on outlet results in a bound up gate. Also any debris that accumulates in the groove results in failure to shut off. Gate valves and flat head screws all belong in the same category “History”

I hate hate valves simply because of the fact that the gates drop over time and then you’re screwed

Ball valves are more user friendly and last longer than a gate valve.

For water. We use them to control flow on boilers all the time though. They even make ones with finer threads to get more precision.

It also needs to be exercised regularly.

You have to open and close them to maintain them for longer times preventive maintenance. In commercial applications. Have been in many buildings that didn't and could not completely turn off tge flow. And they do get stuck. Where the stems can break. Much rather have and use a full port ball valve!!!

Thanks boss I'm going to keep that in my back pocket I'm doing a huge ass project at home with sump pumps for PVC and those are going to come might useful because I'm literally stopping the flow and redirecting to another in case something happens in the yard or there's an overflow situation I can redirect and keep the water out of the basement

What are you on mate- their horrendous for stopping and allowing y flow, you are relying on pure metal on metal contact which after a few years where the gate valve seats you get silt in it so it never shuts off properly. Plus the gland tends to weep as soon as you even touch it. So much better to regulate flow/slow it down for certain applications.

Their outdated and ball balves/lever valves are far better.

Why would you want a valve, that could not completely close?

I hate gate valves! Ball valves are my favorite.

I hate gate valves, they get messed up and don't work way to easy.

Gates do regulate flow. Ball valves don’t. This guy isn’t a plumber and doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
