Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner (Lyrics)

Lyrics:

I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner
On the corner

I am waiting
At the counter
For the man
To pour the coffee

And he fills it
Only halfway
And before
I even argue

He is looking
Out the window
At somebody
Coming in

"It is always
Nice to see you"
Says the man
Behind the counter

To the woman
Who has come in
She is shaking
Her umbrella

And I look
The other way
As they are kissing
Their hellos

I'm pretending
Not to see them
And Instead
I pour the milk

I open
Up the paper
There's a story
Of an actor

Who had died
While he was drinking
He was no one
I had heard of

And I'm turning
To the horoscope
And looking
For the funnies

When I'm feeling
Someone watching me
And so
I raise my head

There's a woman
On the outside
Looking inside
Does she see me?

No she does not
Really see me
Cause she sees
Her own reflection

And I'm trying
Not to notice
That she's hitching
Up her skirt

And while she's
Straightening her stockings
Her hair
Is getting wet

Oh, this rain
It will continue
Through the morning
As I'm listening

To the bells
Of the cathedral
I am thinking
Of your voice...

And of the midnight picnic
Once upon a time
Before the rain began...

I finish up my coffee
It's time to catch the train

So we’re just all agreeing we’ve heard this song from some time in life we don’t remember where from? 😭

Do you know how obnoxious it is to try to look up the lyrics to a song that has a chorus of "do-duh-doo-doo" over and over?! -_-

This song really feels strange to me. I'm not sure what exactly it's meant to be about, but I always focus on it whenever I think about it or whenever it's on. I sort of throw away all my thoughts and focus on the song itself. It's captivating.
It's weird because like, it's not a particularly pleasant song. Or unpleasant. It feels...real. It's just kind of mundane and simple, much like real life. Nothing is going on, a famous person's death goes basically unnoticed, and people are just doing whatever they do every day. I think about the bells of the cathedral. They always ring at the same time, on every day that they do. It's typical life, and it goes on.

Maybe that's what this song is about, and it's why it gives me this uncanny comforting feeling. It's about life. Life goes on. It's kind of the realist thing you could say about a song.

There is something so sad about this song to me.

Fall Out Boy really has some great taste, they used the vocals from this for Centuries, they used the riff from the Munsters for Uma Thurman (also used by P!ATD in Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time). They've got spectacular taste :)

This song always plays on the radio at midnight. I remember hearing this night after night getting home and feeling so relaxed. It's so nostalgic.
