As someone who's had doubts about progressing even as someone who's only 21, it's reassuring to know that we have time and it's never too late. I've always felt that because I started later in life (late teens) I wouldn't get anywhere, and life got in the way so I wasn't able to really focus up till recently. This sort of testimony is really assuring.

Hey Fred, I'm also and ex-cop that became an artist.  At my university, I was told that more people transfer from Criminal Justice to Art than any other major.  How odd is that?  Also, I make MUCH more money as a cg artist here in LA than I did as a Police Officer in South Carolina.. and of course, I'm a 1000x happier.  Hit me up if you want to talk more.

As someone who is just learning how to draw, and wanting to pursue a passion that I was always discourages to pursue....This is VERY VERY inspirational!

Considering how I'm less than five months from turning 40 myself as of writing this, I dug up this old video to remind myself that I can still make it. At the same time, though, it's disappointing that his PixelFigs website is no longer online...had PixelFigs still been around 8 years later, this video would've been even more of an inspiration to those of us starting later in our lives.

WOW! I'm just turning 30. Self-taught and struggling so this is amazing to hear.

What an awesome story - I'm 32 and stupidly thought I was getting too old for this game! It's tough when you see so many talented kids (and I do mean kids) out there but this video really gave me a kick in the ass. Thanks Fred and congratulations on your success, you're a real inspiration. Favourited this video to watch again and again when I'm feeling paranoid about not being 21 any more...

Awesome.Thank you, this motivates me. Very similar story... I will turn 40 this year... Have a 16 yr career in IT and Oil... But Art was always my passion. All these years I've also done Event Caricatures, but at a very slow pace (haven't gone all in, just 20 to 30 gigs per yr)... I just started an acrylic painting workshop, Schoolism most definitely is next. I will aim to make the move from oil to Art. Again thanks for the story, it most certainly hits home :)

I'm 52 and I'd hope to think that it's never too late either. I'm taking my third Schoolism course, I've participated in one of their Live Workshop weekends, and I'll soon be starting on a Chris Oatley digital painting course. My goal is to be making a living with my art within 18 months and working for the next 52 years. After all, it's not really work if you love what you do!

Thanks man! I'm 30 and I just got my start 6 months ago and I wouldn't go back to a "real job" for all the money in the world. It's amazing how loving your job makes so much of a difference in your life.

Karina, I didn't start 'officially' till I was 27, having not gone to university and spent my early twenties working with horses. I have drawn since I was very tiny but I didn't decide to make it my 'thing' till I was 27. I'm 37 this year and still doing it! Its really really hard work though but I wouldn't change it for the world!

Amazing inspirational story. As someone in their 40's working for a defense contractor for over 20 yrs. I totally get that sense of responsibility eating away at what i would rather be doing with my life...which is art. Self taught but recently went back to school for media design and my eyes are open. Great video.

This interview brought tears to my eyes ( happy tears ). I"m 40 now always loved art but lean more towards marketing, PR, special promotional events. My current job is getting old and I really want to make the switch to concept artist. Is scary but I hope I could be sitting in Fred's chair in the future. Fred you are a true hero.

Very inspirational. This was exactly the kind of question I wanted to ask Bobby Chiu and low and behold, there is a video about my concerns on the matter. Awesome artwork btw, Fred. You are an inspiration and hope that you can keep working well beyond 65.
