Is using Nvidia Filters to improve game sharpness or overall visibility cheating?

Thank you to the BiO and WD44 Hell Let Loose teams for the discussion and thank you to Raqizio for permission to use his images on the thumbnail

Special thanks to Red, Shep, Kiteleey, Res and Nox Cinematic for the feedback and support as I worked on this video.

It's cheating and ruining the game.

Filters are not pure immersion. Thats why I am currently playing Hell Let Loose on the frontline in Bakhmut!

In your case, I’d say it’s okay bearing in mind you do have a disability with your vision, but for people with 20/20 vision it is 100% cheating, reminds me of when people were turning the graphics way down past what you could in BFV just for better visibility.

I just use them to make my game look grittier, sort of like Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers.

This was recently a massive issue with Hunt Showdown as well (but Re-Shade instead of Nvidea filters) same principle though, they have now banned use of Re-shade but it sucks for anyone who is colourblind

I figured this was the case. I was wondering why people were able to spot me consistently on maps dark af from 400m. I figured it was purely my movement but then it was my proning and peeking half angles to slowly clear sightlines

Interesting question. I would say do it in the comp games, if everybody does it. But doing it in the public game is unfair to everybody else!

Using filters is definitionally cheating. You’re modifying the game away from what the devs intended specifically to give you a competitive advantage.

Widescreen users also have a much more zoomed in vision when aiming down sight. In combination with this you just don't stand a chance against these cowboys and it takes away all the fun out the game. I think this is a big reason why so many people are leaving the game as well.

One note to mention, GeForce filters must be allowed by the developers. It is in fact a choice that Black Matter and Team17 have allowed, largely speculating to be more marketed through Nvidia.

For a colorblind it's a cool option but for everybody else it's without any doubt a cheat

it's unreal how many will strive to gain an edge in something that really doesn't matter in the real world.

some monitors also have built in modes that help.. crosshairs, filters, shadowboost, zoom etc etc.. I tend to not use these features much but they exist

I'm not really interested in whether or or not it's cheating. This kind of image enhancement has been used in FPSes for ages, and outside of physical tournaments it's impossible to prevent/detect. Anyone who wants to make their game look like this for the sake of having better odds (or has to do it because of a visual impairment) is free to do it as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather just look at a nice game.

Thanks for highlighting this out, I had no idea this was a thing! id say it is cheating as there is an advantage to be had..

Loosers play with filters to get advantage in this non esport game because they are too bad for real competition. Gigachads push everything to EPIC settings, maybe disable motion blur and then just experience realism of World War II game.

Hell Let Loose: a "realistic" shooter that allows you to realistically make your game look like a bright cartoon just like real life

In DayZ everyone was complaining about the night time telling they didn't see a thing and I was seeing everything clearly as day light I found out I had the brightness of my tv way up.

Well when you factor in that details like tall grass cover or even building's windows aren't being drawn in at certain distances already, then IMO it is just too much of an advantage in HLL :/

I think this is an issue where “fairness” is at odds with “competition”. I play on console, so no filters for me (AFIK). I have color blindness-issues too, so I’m actually thankful for devs that take consideration to include some “accessibility” settings even if it is just for menus. I get that HLL looks a certain way on purpose, and I like the vibe. Anyways, that was an interesting video, thanks.

just by turning off antialiasing makes big difference and its much easier to spot enemy even tho game looks ugly then
