"A common sailor? Oh, fie!" Straight from the vinyl of this stellar 1960 recording, Captain Corcoran's words still amuse. 'Pinafore' was the first of Gilbert & Sullivan's successes, and is the third of Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Savoy' operas, preceded by 'Trial By Jury' and 'The Sorcerer'. It opened on May 25th, 1878 at London's Opera Comique Theatre, and ran for 571 performances. Hugely successful, it is popular to this day. Gilbert's satiric wit adroitly pierced institutions and attitudes, while Sullivan's luminous music is--well, ageless.

G&S follower for many years. My dad introduced me to these operettas and I have a book of librettos from all of these operettas.
Even learned some of the patter songs! Can’t quite get as fast as the encore from all of them and some performances are much more fun than others

I was introduced to Gilbert and Sullivan by my High School Senior Class English teacher and have been hooked ever since! After I graduated high school and was able to afford a record player, HMS Pinafore was the first album I purchased. It just so happens that it is the same edition (1960) as this. I still have it but it is badly scratched, so thank you so much for sharing!

The Goddie magic! Apparently the orchestral players were in different symphony orchestras. Thanks! I wish some Captains would sing the published key for the Serenade. Kenneth Sandford did in a run=through I was in at a North Wales course. It's an insult to take it up just up to D when it's marked up to high A. When Barrington sang it (not every time) he sang it in a high key (even higher?) & he was an actor!
