The time has come for me to sell my Porsche Boxster. I have owned it for nearly 3 years and loved every minute but it is time to make a big change in the garage. I am working with Anthony James Cars and their Sale or Return service to get the very best price for my car.

I am actively looking for a 911. It is a close call between a 991.2 GTS and a 992 S. Which will i choose ?

It’s funny how sometimes we are told that options don’t raise the value of a car. And at other times it’s used to justify a high price.

If you do buy a 991.2 make sure you get a proper Porsche warranty. The number of people who have had to replace their turbo’s even on relatively low mileage cars is quite startling. It’s a £10k plus fix.

As someone who custom spec'd a "dream" 992, I sold it a year later and I have a 718 GTS 4.0 manual on order, I would keep your Boxter GTS. I suppose if the dog thing is that important, then no choice for you but be prepared to give up the driving dynamics you are used to, especially if you go 992. It's a great all around everyday car (almost too good to the point of being boring to drive) unless your also after more of grand touring experience.

As a 991.1 2S owner I can vouch for the reliability of the NA 991.1 cars. However the 3.0t (carrera) engines in the 991.2 and 992.1 are well known for failed turbo seals (and a £10k fix) which is at least covered by Porsche's own warranty scheme (so he had better add another £1.3k onto your annual running costs). This issue doesn't exist with the 991.2 and 992 Turbo cars. Having driven the Carrera 991.2 and the 992 I can genuinely say the 991.2 drives the same but just quicker than the 991.1, and that the 992 drives 10-15% better than the 991! However I don't think the 992 equates to the additional cost of a 991.2. Personally if residuals is an issue, then definitely go for a 991.1 Turbo or a 991.2 GTS. TBH I never understood Pedro's decision to go for the 4 pot boxster. I would have gone for a slightly older 981 S or GTS with a 6 pot engine. The 911's 6 pot boxer engines will blow his mind in comparison to the 2.5 4 pot he had in his boxster.

If I wanted a soft top I would have a Boxster over a 911 any day but despite Tracy’s objections I think the Targa works better as a GT than the Cabriolet and is more useable throughout the year. Unless you really want to completely blow your hair away I would be pretty happy with a Coupe with the great sliding sunroof that was an option.

I did virtually the same thing that you’re doing Ped, traded my 718 Boxster GTS 2.5 on a 997.2 C2S driven only 32, 000km. At first I loved the 911, it was more laid back, got more wows from passers-by and sounded much better than the turbo 4. Later, and quite quickly, when I started to take the car on my favourite roads I started to feel uneasy when I pushed the car particularly on high speed corners. The way the front end starts to lighten up is unnerving. I never felt I could (safely) find the limit and gradually drove the car less and less. I’ve just negotiated a trade for a low mileage 981 Cayman GTS that, hopefully, gives me the mid engine balance with the flat 6 howl.

991.1 GTS is from memory 430PS, and doesn't have the turbos many are having issues with. OPC warranty would be a must for me on a 991.2. I was looking at a .2 with around 30k miles and already had new turbos and oil lines. Ended up with a 991.1 Turbo S cab. :-)

I had a similar decision to make. I kept my 718 Cayman. The 911 was always a dream car but couldn’t justify the extra £ for a 991 that shares about 80% of its parts with the car I already own and enjoy. And dare I say the performance on paper looks pretty similar but with a little enjoyment removed.

992, if I’m spending that much I want the newer car with the newer tech…plus personally I prefer the look of the 992

I was on the line between 991.2 S and 992.1 Boggo, but have ended up going for a 992.1 Carrera with a nice spec for less money!

You should listen to Joe and others, the basic 992 is the sweet spot. Kind of wishing I just pushed the boat out for the more modern car.

Pick it up on Friday so time will tell whether I’ve made a decent decision or not!

I have to say Ped I much prefer your Boxster over a 911 any day. Sad to see it go.

If you want a proper 911 then buy a 997, drive back to back with a 991 and you’ll realise the later cars are too big and a GT rather than a sports car. The 997 GTS is the sweet spot if you’re looking for something with comfort and toys, they can be expensive however, especially with a manual box, so a well spec’d carrera S may open up more options. The centre lock wheels may look good, but can cause some real headaches on a road car especially if you are planning some road trips where support may be limited.

I like the targa better. It’s got character and charm.

I personally think you’re barking up the wrong tree!
991.2 / 992 modern turbo engines long term you’re looking for a world of pain on running coasts. Look at 991.1 3.8 non turbo or if you really want the sweet spot drivers car
It’s a no brainer 981 GT4.
Have fun choosing!!

What is the perfect place for a cup holder? For me it is in the cafe.

I did nearly the same decision process. Began with a 718S 6 speed and sold to get a 991.1 C4S Cab. Decided on 991.1 to try non turbo engine. For me, it was the perfect decision. Good luck with the process….i had a ton of fun test driving all sorts of variants….hope the same for you!

Most of the road tests I view and read. The base 911 is all you require in a Porsche. So with that in mind, why dont you look for a base model 992.1 Cab. If it's within your price range ?

My dad has always had boxsters, he sold his boxster T with ceramic brakes for a good price during Covid. He ordered a 992 went on the experience day and cancelled it as he said it’s too big and bulky. It’s all about preference but I too am a boxster man over a 911.
