We take our first look at Winx Club, a show I know nothing about, so naturally it's a really important episode with a bunch of character deaths! I promise, I'm gonna try and do it justice.

Winx Club is quite possibly my favorite show of all time and if I think too long about how much it means to me I will cry. (Having said that I still haven't watched past season 3 [yet] so make of that what you will.) The 4kids version of the series was hugely influential for me in my formative years, but I had outgrown my initial Winx Club era by the time it was airing on Nickelodeon; which is to say that I've never actually seen the particular episode you covered in today’s Sample Platter. Even so, you did a marvelous job of encapsulating so much of what works (and doesn’t work) in this series. I’ve often found Winx Club a bit darker than many other kids’ shows, especially many other girls’ shows, and revisiting it as an adult I’m impressed by how serialized and fast paced the plot is. But yeah, that clip you inserted from S1E12 is infamous for a reason and Bloom’s pet bunny Kiko has been getting more screen time than warranted since literally the first episode I’m afraid. Also, sidenote but the joke where you said “Bloom, you heal people” and zoomed in on Stella was very good. On the whole this is one of the Sample Platters I’ve enjoyed the most and I’ll look forward to you covering Winx Club in full, no matter how long that takes. <3

This show was my SHIT growing up and I heavily grew up with the NickDub and I was not expecting this to be on Nick Knacks

Me and a friend are currently going through a Winx Club watch through and are on season 7. I will say, Naboo dying is a huge shakeup purely because the show just does not go there. The good guys have notable losses in the show, but are almost always able to get past it. This is the biggest shakeup the show ever did (Followed by Musa and Riven actually breaking up in Season 6). Sadly, I am in the group of people that think the show never recovered after the first three seasons. I think all the seasons that follow 3 are kinda bad in their own ways, with varying degrees of "I guess it's fine". But the concepts in the season are generally pretty good, and the creature designs are almost always top notch.

The closest thing we'll ever get to hearing you talk about a 4Kids show.

I'm in the same boat, don't know a ton about the franchise, but Nick picking it up was interesting.

I did not have Winx Club on my Sample Platter Bingo card.

Imagine if this was about an early season 3 episode.
“This episode first aired in Italy in 2007 and on Nick in 2011 but before either of those aired on Fox in 2006.”

I love Winx, it has one of my favourite bits of 'Not at all subtle metaphors' ever, with Mirta, the 'Trans Magic Fairy' Who is literally described like this: 'She claims to be a fairy that just happens to have been born in a Witches Body'

I've never seen an episode of this show, but I can say: Damn, countering a resurrection spell is some true epic villain shit. Feels worse than killing in the first place, just because it has no benefit to you, it's just pure spite. We had an evil cleric do that to our party in D&D like 5 years ago and I still have trust issues with the DM (not really, he's great made a truly hate-able bad guy for us).

The reason why this death is so notable is that they gave Aisha a boyfriend and they killed him off, while all the non-black characters keep their partners alive. That's no good

Man I forgot how dated the look of this show was by the time it hit Nick! It was on the tail end of relevant when it first air in 09! Those sparkle wings, the needlessly kawaii cute pets, oh god this is so MySpace page of a 12 year old girl vibes! The guys even look out of time, as they look more like they came form the late 90s. I also hate to shit on the dub of a kids show, but man is that rough, and it's a redub!

4:10 wizards sliding into frame like three Poochies

Also love the creeping "oh my God, what have I done" energy this video gives off as he realizes he's committed to consuming all of this nonsense

So I should probably apologize for throwing you into the deep end with this request. Tbh, I had initially been considering a different episode, but because it was a season 2 episode it never aired on Nick. The ending of The Wizard’s Trap has stuck in my brain (mostly cause the back gift was such a good bait and switch) since I learned about in back in 2009, so that was the first thing that came into my brain. The fact that it isn’t a great first episode didn’t really occur to me.

Oops. Sorry about that.

To answer your question about how the fanbase views Nabu, that’s a bit complicated. Now I could be wrong with my memory of this as most of the fan sites I followed back then are long gone, but Nabu debuted near the end of Season 3 (which was originally planned to be the last season). The problem he was that he was underdeveloped and clearly just added to be Aisha’s love interest.

Season 4 developed him more and had him propose to Aisha. (The Nick dub infamously tried to censor that by changing it to him asking to be her “forever girlfriend”, but I digress. ) This, along with his sacrifice made him a VERY popular character.

Nick Knacks talking about Winx Club??? I’m shocked

"We don't know Nabu that well..."

I know that that death scene was delivered _terribly._ It certainly doesn't have anything resembling the gravitas of Prime's death.

I had a feeling you would pick a Sample Platter that’s completely different from the actual Nick Knacks episode.
