Dr. Jonathan Shedler of the University of California at San Francisco joins us to discuss the problems that arise when random people declare themselves "therapists" and dish out platitudes to unsuspecting people, but also why, contrary to what many on the right think these days, there is legitimate benefit from psychotherapy, which amounts to promoting self-knowledge and realizing that things we don't know about ourselves can harm us.

I have been going through the Myth of mental Illness by Thomas Szaz. This episode really benefited my reading.

I’m wondering if pop psychology on social media or earlier in magazines is an outgrowth of the portrayal of therapy in movies and television. Taking the show The Sopranos for example, how accurate is it? Are therapists influenced by mass media portrayal of their profession?

So, the psychiatric & therapy industry is suffering from what plagues most other industries: root cause thinking.

I get depressed when I try to decide whether to eat my chips with a fork, or to pick them up with my fingers. I want to be a good person but this problem overwhelms me and makes me feel evil. Am I truly evil?

I have a rather low view of psychology/therapy leaning toward the Soprano view that it acts as more something that allows enabling, but I'm curious about this alternative

No direct answers to the questions. It’s very unfortunate. I was actually really hoping for some direct answers about the effectiveness of psychotherapy.

Do psychotherapist talk SO SLOW because they get paid by the hour?

A psychologist calling for more regulations for his industry is anti freedom.

A good example of people who need self-knowledge are all those weirdos who never stop talking about trans in women's sports. Why are they so obsessed with something so... pointless and unimportant? Those guys clearly need a check out.
