A 22 year old homeless young man I met told me that his biggest tips for living on the street were to:
1) Get a job at some type of restaurant so you can always eat.
2) Get a 24hr gym membership for showers, restroom, and a warm place to be inside on cold nights. He said they don't really want you to sleep in the gyms but you can get away with naps in the massage chair or in the dressing room if you get up and work out in between throughout the night.
3) Prioritize paying for a cell phone and saving money toward a deposit for an apartment if that's your goal.
*A young woman said for ladies to remember to have enough money for feminine products. Important tip.

I’ve watched this guy’s journey for over a year now, he has had an apartment for a few months now ❤

it is so depressing that we live in a country that actually let's teenagers live like this. No one should be forced to live out on the streets like this. The people his mom work for can probably buy lunches that are 20 times the price of what he eats in an entire day.

Sad part is that you can't get anything for less than $1 at the dollar or 99 cent store anymore, you're better off looking for the under $1 stuff at Target or Walmart. That's basically how we get our pastas and rice. For anyone who doesn't know, this young man and his mother are no longer homeless and are doing well for themselves.

for those wondering how he has a phone, he mentioned that before he went homeless, his mom got enough money to get him a phone but they couldn't pay the rent and all. remember housing prices and rent is much more expensive than a phone + data plan. he also charges his phone at free outlets

edit: why do i have 1.5k likes where r y'all coming from

I'm complaining about school and stress but this guy has to live everyday without a house and a tight budget. Absolute respect and I hope for the best for this man.

I met a teenager (17) a few months ago. He was on the street and we stopped to get him some food, by talking with him we learned that he'd been homeless since he was 13 and his mom had driven him hours and hours from home just to abandon him in the city we found him at. He had to constantly wait on the road outside of restaurants (mainly Chik-fil-a because of the kind workers and customers) in hopes someone would give him some food. We exchanged numbers in case he ever needed someone to call. I haven't seen him or heard from him since but I pray every time I remember him that he's okay.

Edit: For those wondering, our area isn't a very good area to begin with. We wanted to help, but there's nothing we could have done, it would've just made things worse and he was already going to be 18 soon. He mentioned trying to apply for jobs though, so I pray he was able to get one and is living better now. We ourselves wouldn't have had much of enough money to take him home, but we did offer it to him and gave him our number in case he ever needed anything at all.

I am an 18 year old girl watching this and I realise now, how privileged I am, to have a good and safe home.
I wish them the best of luck, so they’ll have a safe home again, no kid should live on the streets 💕.

At the time I wasn't homeless but my parents split up. I was 15, and my parents let me choose who I would stay with. My brother went with my mother because he was so little and needed extra care. I chose my father. He was laid-off that year too and our house was oil heated. So no hot showers, no heating. My mother left my father 2 weeks before my birthday in December, we got 4-5 feet of snow that year. School busses stuck on the high way that year from the bad snow storm. Kids at school would give me their school lunches and I would share them with my father when I got home. His friend would let us stay over sometimes for warmed, a shower, and a nice hot meal. It was so rough. I know I broke my mother's heart the day I chose to stay with my dad, but I remember over hearing him tell his friend on the phone if I hadn't stayed he would have ended his life. With how rough it was WITH him I imagine he would have followed through if he didn't have me there with him.

Later down the line all throughout my 20s I was on-and-off homeless. As a woman alone that was hard. Somedays you just bled your pants. Couldnt change them because then all your "clean clothes" would get dirty too so you'd have to just sit there in literal cold blood until your time was over before you could wash them in the sink of a gas station bathroom. Super embarrassing but it is what it was.

PS: I am no longer in that situation anymore. I am in a safer place and finally got food stamps!

I breathed a sigh of relief when it said "my mom and me" in one of the videos. It's sad that they experienced homelessness, but at least they have each other, a car to sleep in, and some income. I'm thankful it's not one of those situations when a parent abandons and kicks out their child with nothing. They are resourceful; it's fortunate that those resources are available for free too. With so many ppl struggling with housing cost and slumlords, this was also informative to whoever may need it. I've fortunately haven't experienced homelessness, but I can't help but feel like it's important to still value cleanliness and organization to not completely give up on yourself and stay mentally well enough to recover from the situation

just an update: he has a home!! he’s renting an apartment? (I think). It’s pretty amazing how far he’s gotten after being homeless for four years ❤️

edit: I’m glad you guys liked to see this 😊

To everyone saying this is fake, let me ask you a few questions. How are you confused that a house cost more than a phone? Also, he might have gotten the phone before he was homeless. Also he’s prolly earning money from TikTok and donations. Just cause he can’t buy a $150, 000 house doesn’t mean he can’t buy a $500 phone.

It was really hard to hold back tears when he would mention his food budget for the day -- "0.63." I feel like an idiot for worrying about spending $70 at Whole Foods when I should be grateful I have the means to do so. I hope and pray this young man and his mother are doing better, because no one, especially a child, should have to go through this

Been there done that. There were some awful winter nights when I only could afford to run the heat in the car long enough to barely avoid hypothermia, but at least I had a car. Lots and lots and lots of 25 cent ramen and bar s hotdogs. I own a home now on a lake. Felt like an impossible dream back then. Never give up.

A friendly reminder to those about to comment. Please remember a very important detail.

Homeless does not automatically mean that you also have none of your belongings. You can be evicted and have a car and phone. Homeless = no home. I truly didn't think I'd have to explain this, but if you needed the reminder here you go.

That portable cooker is a real hero. I hope one day when he's finally living comfortably in their own home he'll keep the portable cooker around as a reminder of those days.

I honestly started to tear up every time he made a thumbs up because I know he didn’t like the life he’s in and just making videos for other people knowing he has to sleep outside all the time, I’m very happy that he’s taking care of his needs responsibly and has budgets he follows. And this is why we should always be grateful for what we have because this teen has been buying his own food cooking it and having a budget while some of us don’t have to worry about it. Some would be nervous to go to a store if they were homeless because they'd feel like the staff would kick them or something, but this teen had confidence and went in the store and got him a nice meal to eat and he recorded his own experience.

This could inspire others and give them enough confidence for others who are in the same situation to do the same.
