Kelly Slater Tackles one of Sydney's Weirdest Slabs

When do you think the last time was that Kelly Slater spent months in one place? Has it been years? Maybe decades? Traveling nonstop since he was a teenager, and with homes strategically placed around the world, Slater has been in perpetual motion. A ‘CT event here. A wave pool meeting there. A last minute strike for a pumping swell in-between.

When COVID-19 took off and international travel came to a screeching halt, Slater ended up hunkering down where he happened to be at the time, in Australia. A smart decision. Not only has Australia been more lax about letting surfers surf, it’s also had a solid run of autumn swell, highlighted by a handful of very memorable days. In this edit, our latest episode of “Amp Sessions”, Slater scores an extremely rare spot — or at least he gives it a valiant attempt. This wave looks about as unwieldy as it is heavy, the combination of which makes for extremely treacherous surfing, but also highly entertaining viewing. Hard not to be impressed by this almost 50 yr old surfer killing this slab. So smooth, so much experience and just fun to watch.

No one can deny he's the GOAT. That wave reading is insane. Such perfect lines. I saw Kelly compete in Hossegor, France, years ago. Everyone lined up on the same spot, waiting for the big rights. Kelly was far on the right, alone, taking no waves. I was feeling kind of bad for him. Then, after a while, a freaking, huge left pops up from nowhere, taking everyone by surprise except him of course, he takes it and scores a 10.

I met Kelly at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am one year...not just the greatest surfer to ever live, but one hell of a nice guy too.

Is that Little Avalon? He used to have an apartment there back in the 90’s. Not that any LA lokes would confirm this location. Pretty sure its not his first crack at this spot.
