The last time I saw or spoke with my friend John Denver was in November of ‘96, and we ended up talking about guitar—a topic we didn’t often discuss. As our conversation wrapped up, we got onto the subject of Martin guitars and my preference for a good d28 12. They never quite did it for him, though. He was devoted to his Guild f-50, Yamaha, and for a period, his Olson. Toward the end, he mostly played Taylors, which he loved for their tone and playability. I always found it interesting that Martins never really captured his interest. Same with Gibson, but actually one of his most coveted and sentimental guitars was a Gibson. He was a good man and his passing in such a tragic accident was heartbreaking. Anyway, I thought of this as Angela played and thought I’d share.

I dreamed of one of these Martin 12s since I was a kid and a few years back found a nice used 2014 D12-28 at Tone Shop out of Texas. Arrived in perfect condition and I have loved it since.

I have owned and played a lot of 12 strings over the years, 4 at present. These will never disappoint you or your audience.

I have a little older Martin 12 — a 1969 D12-20 that I bought new.

I scraped together enough money for a new Martin, intending to get a D-28 based it being THE guitar — but happened to pick up the 12 and was just gobsmacked by the rich sound so took it home. — getting the D-28 3 years later used, also a ‘69, one of the last Brazilians by luck.

A 2005 Norman Blake (a personal idol) 000-28 rounded out my collection. It is smaller and lighter at 12 frets and I like the playability in open D.

While I know there are other fine guitars, I never considered anything but a Martin.
