I just imagine a tired clerk looking hopeless as people all around their batery emporium keep droping bateries over and over to "see if they bounce" disregarding the tool to measure charge the clerk has in their hand.

Heres another trick: if the batteries was just laying anywhere that mean they are 98% out of charge!
