Speed test on the storages server (Lenovo x3550 M4)
I setup an RAMdisk and test SSD, SAS, SATA in RAID 0, 1 and 5
Also 1 disk vs. 2 disks vs. 24 drives :-)

I did not really show any thing that makes sense to link to, on Amazon,, so here is some weird stuff you would never need!!!

Even just 1$ a month, comes out to the same as Binge-watching all of my 500+ Videos every month.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.

I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

You are probably hitting the cache instead of the actual drive, which makes sense why you get the same result on all the drives

Was I the only one A: Bothered by the unnecessary right-click "copy here" and the entering/exiting of the folder nonstop? and B: Screaming "WRITE CACHE IS TURNED ON!"

lol. Good video either way, sir! :)

The new ending is perfect! Asyou know the cache speed up all the drive, but when a drive is very slow, the system have to wait for the drive to write the data, so it drop to zero. With faster drive and not so big files, you barely notice this thing, anyway the result is terrific!!!

I find one large fine typically transfers much faster than a bunch of smaller files of same total size. So I usually go a bunch of smaller in one folder for easier transfer for testing, or zip them to consolidate for real transfer

I am currently testing ISCSI with my Synology and windows servers, it is going very well. This video was an eye opener.

You don't need thirdparty software anymore to create ramdisk. You can do this using the powershell interface for the iscsi target with the New-IscsiVirtualDisk –Path ramdisk:<DiskName>.vhdx -... command. (Note, this will mess up the server manager interface, so you need to manage the disks with powershell until you remove the ramdisk target.)

To get the real speeds open task manager and look for the disk performance counter, if you don't see them run diskperf -y as administrator (command prompt/run) open task manager again and they'll be there, those will be the actual write speeds to disk.

It seems like magic but I love it!! I bet you go in the server room sometimes just to enjoy the sounds and blinking lights!

Greate video again. I have a question. How have you now the disc enclosure connected? Each with 1 SAS Bus with 6Gbit oder has it two uplinks? Maybe that limits your throughput to the disc?

You can disable file system caching in the OS settings IIRC

I think the 1GB limit is the network from a single 10Gb connection. = 1.25GB speed.

Mårten, very good video.... but it wasn't super clear to me, how you configured the Win Storage Spaces, to get the tested RAID 0, 1, 5 configs, Can you provide some info on that, pls?

Hey, you should look into doing a tiered storage space. I just did that and created an iSCSI drive. Using to store and run my video games. Works really well. Write Back cache can also be enabled. Happy storing!

Hi dear PlayHouse, you can use copy handler, it shows also how fast a file was copied.

Hey Morton, did you find the RDMA settings on the Virtual Switch properties? Noticeable Improvements especially with NVMe

Good Video Morton, very interesting tests.
Regars!

This all seems like theres an 1GBs/8Gbs limit somewhere, simliar to what performance comes from sata 3 or 10Gbs ethernet.

something is odd, RAID 5 is FASTER than RAID 1...Also, it would be helpful to know HOW many drives are in the arrays - there is definitely a # of drives where the return diminishes... Another question is what RAID controllers are you using? Are you using PERC hardware controllers or Windows OS to configure the RAID? Good Stuff, keep it up, more details would be helpful

Hey, Morten, great videos. Just a question/suggestion for future ones: couldn't you do all of this using a remote desktop so we won't have to listen to that constant noise? :) keep up the great work.
