- Obesity is defined as being above the 95th percentile for BMI.
- Children with obesity are at a higher risk for Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Asthma, Sleep Apnea, and joint disease.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), causes of obesity are multifaceted and include genetic, socioeconomic, environmental, and physiologic factors.
Risk factors for obesity include physical inactivity, challenged socioeconomic factors, a family history of obesity, excessive screen time, a diet high in processed foods, and a diet high in added sugar.
According to the AAP, management/ prevention of childhood obesity may include
-Nutrition support
- Physical activity treatment
- Behavioral therapy
- Pharmacotherapy (i.e. Wegovy for children 12 and others)
- Intensive Health Behavior and Lifestyle Treatment (IHBLT)
- Bariatric surgery (i.e. gastric sleeve) for children with BMIs at or above the 120th percentile
- Structural racism and lack of access to healthy foods are issues that must be addressed in order to fight childhood obesity
