There is a crucial aspect of Kotlin in Android, and that is Jetpack Compose. This is a new way of building declarative UI for Android (and Multiplatform, also another point for kotlin) This UI library is akin to React for Web and can only be done in Kotlin as far as I know, and will push more developers to Kotlin if they want to work with this new technology for building UI. Also, Jetbrains is also pushing Kotlin a lot with multi platform, so if you are an Android developer you could even branch out to other platforms by leveraging Kotlin. Have a nice day!

That is correct JetBrains developed Kotlin for Google. Kotlin is a Google language now and was created to replace Java because of previous issues Google had with a company called Oracle who owns Java. So, Kotlin is now Googles flag ship language for native mobile development.
Also, as a side note I think in my personal opinion there will always be work for mobile with Java. Someone needs to maintain that legacy code. If let say for example the jobs dry up for mobile using Java which I really doubt it, you could always pivot your Java skills in another field. Heck maybe someone is still selling blue rays still which were written in Java, and they are looking for Java Developers for their old blue rays lol. Point being I noticed there are more Java jobs out there versus Kotlin jobs. Go to indeed and you'll find less than 500 jobs looking for Kotlin developers and you'll find 6000 jobs looking for Java Developer jobs at New York City. If you don't believe me, check for yourself.
I wouldn't go Kotlin I would rather go cross platform with JavaScript and React Native, better job prospects. But going back to the original question Kotlin or Java for mobile? I would choose Java not Kotlin.
