What technologies can be used to help a Deaf child navigate our world? Inclusion and accessibility advocate Beth Leipholtz describes the tools she uses to support her son Cooper. Her first example is a cheat sheet explaining how to troubleshoot cochlear implant technology, which she ensures his caregivers always have access to. Second, she is raising him to understand both ASL and spoken English so that he still has access to language without his cochlear implants. Lastly, she has taught him to express his needs and advocate for himself!

Beth Leipholtz is an inclusion and accessibility advocate who believes in creating a more accepting world for our children. As the hearing mother of a deaf child, Beth is raising her son, Cooper, bilingually in both hearing and Deaf cultures. She shares her parenting journey on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, where she has built a community of more than 1.5 million people around disability inclusion.

I’m so glad Cooper was blessed with such loving parents. He’s gonna thrive! ❤❤❤

This was both interesting and informative. I’ve always wondered how hearing parents communicate with non-hearing children (and vice-versa, of course). Pretty soon your family will be bilingual! Thank you for sharing.❤

Wow, you probably are the greatest mom ever… And I say that because my heart is overfilled with love and joy and compassion watching this video❤❤. I think it’s awesome that you’re teaching him both, hopefully so he can read lips and do sign language, which I think is both really cool. And I love that he can tell people when his batteries, low and advocate for himself as well, as I love the fact that you advocate for him. Thank you so much for loving your children as much as I love mine and for going that extra 10 miles when they needed you to❤❤❤
