Something similar happened in Australia when Starbucks tried to franchise there, because Australia has a large sit down culture and specific tastes when it comes to coffee and cafes most of the stores shut down. Except they actually tried to change to the local culture and is doing quite well now.

These corporations need to realize that they need to adapt to local culture when they want to franchise globally as many places have wildly different tastes.

When I heard that Domino’s had closed in Italy, it didn’t seem surprising to me. I live in a small city, and there are already too many pizzerias—four, to be exact—and they all offer delivery. Then there are also restaurants that serve pizza, at least two more if I’m not mistaken.

If we expand the city to include everything considered part of it—so the nearby villages that are still under the city’s administration—it becomes even crazier because each village has at least two pizzerias.

So when Pizza Hut arrived, it had to attract people, but older customers, especially those over 30, were pretty much out of the equation. If they want pizza, they want a traditional one—not something with jalapeños, nachos, or other unusual ingredients.

The second factor is the price. From where I usually order, I can get a large pizza delivered to my home in 20 minutes for around €8-10.

And finally, there’s the quality. Even though I have some doubts about this, many people might have seen these pizzas as fast food and assumed the ingredients were low quality—even if they were probably the same.

Some people don't quite grasp how easy and often cheap it is to buy a good pizza in Italy. It is way better than any other place, especially in the south.

In italy we usually pay around 5 to 8 euro for a good pizza, domino's pizzas were 8 to 12 euro for an average pizza, the price wasn't helping them at all

Never forget the time they tried to open a Pizza Hut right across from Jabba's Palace.
