Is there a reason to use python over c or something similar? Or is it just simplicity of the language etc

i use notepad++ to wite code in, does that make any difference? Cause i get errors all the time when i run the script.
for example when i wrote this one:
x = 0
print x

i got "missing parentheses in call to 'print'

but when i wrote
x = 0
print (0)

then it worked

and another example is when i did the

print str(x) + Y

i got "invalid syntax"

what am i doing wrong here?
