Check out the THREE new papers from one of the teams investigating the crisis in cosmology with the James Webb Space Telescope:

I'll be covering this more in this month's Night Sky News episode due out Thursday 25th January 2024. Subscribe so you don't miss it!

👩🏽‍💻 I’m Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don’t know. If you’ve ever wondered about something in space and couldn’t find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

"You were supposed to destroy the crisis in cosmology, not join them!"

We need to measure the expansion rate of the Crisis in Cosmology 😅

Scientists are funny.
S: Hey JWST, did we do this wrong?
JWST: Nope, it's all correct.
S: F***!

A crisis is just an opportunity with panic.

I appreciate when scientists disagree and debate. It shows that science is flexible and open to different ideas, not just stuck in one way of thinking.

This is what I love about science. The willingness to admit when things aren’t quite right and the drive to figure it out.

I’d rather live in a world that has questions that cannot (yet) be answered than a world with answers that cannot be questioned.

A crisis may sound like a bad thing and in some ways it is but at the same time it's basically job security for scientists because that means they have more and more to figure out.

I absolutely love this. Having believed for years that Physics has stagnated, and is long overdue for a major shakeup, I am delighted the JWST has put you all on your toes. Complacency is the antithesis of discovery. It's good to be reminded from time to time that we are not infallible, and that what we don't know so outweighs what we do, it's like comparing an amoeba to a galaxy. If we have to tear it all down back to Newton, and rebuild it to more accurate model, I am fine with that. Long past time.

JWST is a great gift that keeps on giving. The data is constantly proving theorists wrong.

Getting the JWST is a bit like getting your child a drum set.
It sounded like a good idea at the time, boy oh boy what a headache! 😂

Such an exciting time to be an astrophysicist, huh?

Science tends to get a bad name if new facts come along yet nothing changes the theories and those who bring the new facts are shot down in flames .... can anyone think of a science/sector like that ? :-)

There is a proposal for a starship based telescope… imagine how much more we can learn if JWST is already giving us all these new observations

It is reassuring to see scientists who acknowledge the limits of what is regarded as Established, AND can also acknowledge Problems and Puzzles and Unsolved Dilemmas.

I'm just gonna say.
Historically in science a 'crisis' problem always was solved by paradigm shift and a fundamental model change

Thanks Becky, it's just one crisis after another.

Hey Dr. Becky I’m currently working on a book called 8000 and was wondering if I could use your name for a star system in the series. Your videos have been very inspirational for the series and helped with including more scientific accuracy

Just reading your book, a brief history of black holes and I even understand it !
