Not everyone can afford everything they want when they first build their house.

I built a new home over 25 years ago.
At that time I simply couldn’t afford all the high end features and finishes that I wanted. One money saving choice was hollow core interior doors and rather simple steel exterior doors. And I chose Anderson windows over Pella. My kitchen countertops and bathroom sink tops are laminate.

Now here I am almost 30 years later and my house needs an interior refresh.

So now I’m upgrading to get many of the things that I simply couldn’t afford when I first built my house.

I went from an old drafty farmhouse with single pane windows, 60 amp electric service, 1 bathroom, and no garage to a beautiful new all brick house with 2 x 6 exterior framing, 2.5 baths, and a 3 car heated garage.

Hollow core interior doors and Formica countertops are not such a bad thing if they help make your new house affordable, as opposed to insisting on the best of everything in a house you can’t afford that never gets built.
