So assuming each LED runs on 3 volts (standard +-) the circuit needs 6 volts. He's using a 9 volt battery. Using Ohms Law, Fv=3 divided by 0.02A (standard current) gives you a required resister value of 150 ohms. He didn't put a resister in the circuit. The LEDs must have a wide tolerance.
