This session, "Interprofessional Education for Sustainability Pathways, Possibilities and Experiments from Melbourne" organised by the U21 HSG Interprofessional Education Special Interest Staff Group on 8 June 2023 is the second of a three-part series to equip those working in the healthcare sector on how climate change will impact the healthcare practice.

In this session, Dr Ken Winkel shares experiences in how University of Melbourne has been equipping more of their students to have the knowledge and skills to embed sustainability into their learning.

Bio of Dr Ken Winkel:
Associate Professor Ken Winkel, currently a teaching specialist within the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health (MSPGH), is the former Director of the Australian Venom Research Unit (AVRU) at the University of Melbourne. He represents the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the Sustainability Advisory Group to the University of Melbourne and co-ordinates MSPGH postgraduate healthcare sustainability and undergraduate One Health teaching.
He is also affiliated with the Medical History Museum, within Melbourne Medical School, is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM), a member of the Doctors for the Environment Australia Biodiversity Special Interest Group [SIG] and ACTM One Health SIG.
Dr Winkel is an alumnus of the University of Melbourne (PhD, Walter and Elisa Hall Institute), the University of Queensland (MBBS) (BMedSci, Tropical Health Program, QIMR) and the Swiss Tropical Institute (Master of International Health Advanced module, Basel). Dr Winkel has published more than 100 papers on One Health topics, including in the Lancet and Lancet Planetary Health, and secured more than $7M in funding from State and Federal Health Departments as well as from the NH&MRC. He has won multiple teaching awards, including for the ‘Sharing Place, Learning Together’ Partnership with Maningrida College in Arnhem Land and for the ‘Our Planet, Our Health’ teaching collaboration with The Doherty Institute and Melbourne Veterinary School. He has also supervised numerous PhD and other students and is now focused on amplifying the sustainability in healthcare agenda.
