Joe Dante on THE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS

Low rent but affectionately made by professional monster movie fans, this  modest Creature imitation didn't garner many theatrical playdates but had a long afterlife on tv Double Chiller programs.

The well constructed Monster is considerably less sympathetic than his Black Lagoon compatriot. The producers missed a bet by not hiring their lead actor, radio star Les Tremayne, to narrate the trailer.

I have always loved this movie since I first saw it on tv in the early sixties. My brother who lives in California went to see the lighthouse back in the 1980's.

This was Phillip Lathrop's first gig as a director of photography. Prior to that, he was Russ Metty's camera operator, culminating in Orson Welles brilliant TOUCH OF EVIL. The memorably ugly monster is forever enshrined on the cover of an album by the Angry Samoans.

I will never forget the little boy calling out for Mr. Kolchak unaware that the monster is swinging the unfortunate man's severed head (and someone elses's head too IIRC)as he approached.

The little boy was played by Wayne Berwick. Son of the director, Irvin Berwick. The dead little "girl" was also played by Wayne. Covered with a coat with feet dangling out, wearing little girls' shoes...being carried by none other than...Irvin Berwick.

Unless I read it wrong, I am pretty sure the monster was in love with the girl! (He even stole her underwear!!) But he did get a little head from someone else!

I hope one day Diplovertebron gets to fight the Hulk!!!! That would be so cool!!!! They could have Diplovertebron chasing Bruce Banner around and around that same light tower. Only this time helpless Banner turns into Hulk and then the battle is on!!!! Lol!!!! I don't think Diplovertebron will be able to go to many rounds with Hulk!!!! The Hulk will beat the tar out of him!!!!
