Boris Spassky (30 January 1937) was the 10th World Champion.

He won the title in 1969 by defeating Tigran Petrosian and played in three world championship matches.

He won the Soviet Chess Championship twice (1961, 1973), and twice lost in playoffs (1956, 1963), after tying for first place.

He was a World Chess Championship candidate on seven occasions (1956, 1965, 1968, 1974, 1977, 1980 and 1985), winning in 1965 and 1968, reaching the semi-final stage in 1974 and the final stage in 1977.

He played board one in the USSR vs Rest of the World match at Belgrade 1970 and played in 10 Chess Olympias, seven for Russia and three for France, winning eight gold medals (two individuals).

The chess game between "Kronsteen" and "McAdams" in the early part of the James Bond movie "From Russia With Love" is based on a game in that opening played between Spassky and David Bronstein in 1960.

He has been described as the first universal chess player and is the oldest living World Champion.
