I mentioned Orbiter in an earlier Minecraft video, and figured this, the day before an actual space shuttle launch, would be the best time to try a first impressions let's play of it! Its very difficult to install and get configurated to even start playing, but I do my best to at least show you through a tutorial mission of launching the Space Shuttle.

Probably because Kerbal Space Program basically ripped off orbiter and dumbed it down or the masses. Orbiter has been around since at least 2005 or earlier.

Wow, so much hate on this video. If you're here to learn about the game or see a review, you're in the wrong place. Go watch his latest videos and you'll see the type of content he makes; they're called "let's plays". People who subscribe to Kurt do so because we enjoy his narration and personality - the game is like a bonus. His main series Far Lands or Bust is him literally walking in a game for 35 minutes and talking to us.

I think it's funny when people complain about Kurt's long commentary. -That's- why a lot of people are here; his charm is in his conversational rambling. I love it! For the rest of you... 8:10 .

I'm well aware that the Queen didn't invent it, but that does not change that fact that the technical term for it is, in fact, "The Queen's English". Just like, back when it was a King in charge, it was referred to as "The King's English".

The technical term for English includes the title of whatever gender monarch is currently ruling over England.

Maybe you should get your facts straight before accusing me of trolling.

I have been to a night launch before my dad knew someone that worked at NASA and got us some tickets and we were 3 miles from the launch but we had to leave right when it went up very awesome to see

That was quite cool. It made me want to watch the launch tomorrow :)

Also the zoom out at the end was sweet :)

Its funny I live just 15 miles away from where they used to launch the shuttle, and where they still launch rockets. Its an amazing sight an never gets old.

That synced video was pretty damn cool. Nice job on that!

Actually, the launch countdown was spot on! The shuttle engines start at Time minus 6 seconds.

I actually say that very space craft launch from the Kennedy Space Center from up close when I was 5. It was in the middle of the night too, pretty awesome.

The funny thing about the playback in this sim is that it's set on a north-to-south pass, whereas the Shuttle Program only used south-to-north so they could do their Trans-Atlantic aborts to Spain or the Azores or whatever if necessary.

Just choose 'Realistic Sky' in the config menu if the bright one doesn't suit you. Everything in Orbiter is changable. The sound, resolution, spacecraft, launch pads, etc. There's thousands of 3rd party mods. Very high res textures are available as optional d/l. Steep learning curve. Getting into low Earth orbit isn't all that difficult...but, Moon shots, voyages to Jupiter and the like will take some effort. The Orbiter forum is very helpful.

there is a Level 14 texture for earth now, its simply stunning, like watching true HD for the first time hehe. And there is a shuttle thats 1000x better than the default shuttle, it has a working RMS (Robot arm to you and me lol) etc!

Orbiter has come so far!

I used to play this years ago! I'd just fly up high and after using my fuel i used the rcs (at the time I thought it was extra fuel) and crash in the ground! Oh the memories

Reminds me of Space Shuttle Mission 2007, except in SSM 2007, you had a cockpit full of buttons and switches that you had to go through when instructed by mission command.

I think you'd be surprised just how many stars you can see with the naked eye when there isn't an atmosphere in the way. You just don't see them that often on pictures because they're set to expose the subject (be it the Shuttle, ISS, Earth, Moon/whatever) properly, not the background.

You do realise that there would be a Danger Area in place for the duration of the launch and seperation sequence so any professional pilot would actually be able to check their departure/arrival maps and know to avoid the airspace...
