Driving in Bulgaria: Republic Road I-5 E85 from Ruse to Byala

Welcome back to the roads of Bulgaria. In this video you can drive along on the Republic Road I-5 (E85) from Ruse to Byala. Ruse is a large city in the North of Bulgaria on the border with Romania. The Danube river runs between Bulgaria and Romania and is almost at its widest when passing Ruse. Border crossings are therefore expensive, which is why there are only two bridges between Bulgaria and Romania across the Danube. One at Vidin in the Northwest of the country, and one at Ruse.

Because of the border crossing, the Republic Road I-5 E85 is quite a busy freight corridor and carries quite a bit of international traffic. Motorway plans for the stretch Ruse - Veliko Tarnovo are currently on the table but it will likely still be a while until they start construction. Currently construction works on the A6 Europe Motorway West of Sofia, A2 Hemus Motorway and A3 Struma Motorway are ongoing.

I have driven this particular stretch a couple of times now, both during the day and during the night and I have to conclude that it's definitely not my favorite stretch of road to drive. Because there is little opportunity to overtake, some drivers are willing to take big risks to overtake leading to very dangerous situations. If you are not driving over the speed limit, there is also a good chance of being tailgated pretty much all of the way. Hopefully the planned Motorway can alleviate some of these issues is the near future!
