Hydrogeology 101: Groundwater exploration strategy

Показать описание
In this video I will discuss my preferred groundwater exploration strategy, which divides a project up into four separate phases:
Phase 1: Desk study and baseline survey
Phase 2: Geophysical survey
Phase 3: Exploratory drilling and pumping tests
Phase 4: Groundwater exploration report
At the end of phases 1 & 2 you decide to either stop the project, continue with caution or to go ahead. This reduces the risk of wasting time and money on unsuccessful wells. We will look at some examples from projects in Mali, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Ghana.

This is an educational video & part of the Hydrogeology 101 course.

How did you break into gw well installation in Africa? These videos are super helpful for me as a junior geologist in environmental consulting!! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Andreas. I have a MSc in surface hydrology and remote sensing. I am self-learning groundwater hydrology and soon want to be a hydrogeologist. I have a solid knowledge in GIS, Hydrology, Hydroclimatology.

I want to fill a gap in my country Somaliland where it's hard to find a knowledgeable and experienced hydrogeologist. About 6 out of 10 drilled wells fail during the pumping test because of very poor geophysical survey and they skip the desk and baseline studies. Those people who do such poor geophysical survey have only geology background.

Would I be a good hydrogeologist soon?

Can hydrogeoligist do all the phases of groundwater exploration including the geophysical survey?

Hello Mr Andreas, thanks for these extremely valuable tutorials. I have a question regarding to the pumping tests that you mentioned in here. How do we actually interpret the recharge zones based on a pumping test result like a constant discharge test curve? I have heard this in a couple of places, but is it actually possible to delineate such information like this area must be a inflow boundary, this area must be a no flow boundary and so on, only based on the pumping test?
Really appreciate if you could let us know your thoughts on this. Thanks for the amazing work again :)

Thanks...it was very informative... but what if want to drill a well on a private land, I mean is it the same steps or more or less?
So you're restricted to a limited area on your land...what's the best tools available for decrease odds of failure?

Informative video, I'm from Ghana. Will also like to know the opportunities in this field if one specialises.
