Shaun Murphy rants about amateurs after losing to an amateur.

Amateur golfer Shaun Murphy complains about amateurs being allowed to compete in pro snooker tournaments. On the one hand you could argue that if you are a pro you should be beating amateurs but according to Shaun that’s not the case.

Mark Selby agrees with Shaun

but Ronnie O’Sullivan strongly disagrees telling Shaun to “go and get a job!”

No amateurs but its okay to invite Hendry and White, 2 hasbeens ( my two favourite players of all time) and its okay to invite the two women players who are rubbish on the grounds of gender equality, yet the top amateurs who earn their stripes on merit aren't welcome, total hypocrites

Amateur or not, he was down 5-1 to a rank amateur. I am an amateur snooker player and I bet there's not one professional snooker player I could beat more than 1 frame, unless that professional wasn't up to professional standards. Maybe 2 if I'm playing my best but 5-1 down?? UK championship?? Shaun, are you having a laugh? It's a piss take. He just knows he's not up to his old standard and he's declining.

LOL! Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke! 🤣 He puts on the 'nice guy of snooker' act but it is a masquerade; he is a nasty piece of work.

Perhaps if he shed 20lbs-30lbs his fortunes would improve! It was a tad bizarre to hear him rant and rave and whinge and whine about needing to put food on the table! I think you could argue he has had enough already!

Anyway, good for Si! He played well - he beat a 'professional' fair and square - and, like many of his compatriots, looks as cool as a cucumber when at the table. He also looks like a nice lad!

If an amateur can beat a professional then what does that say about the level of the professional? No wonder Murphy wants to be protected from these youngsters coming through!

I think it's great when the amateurs play the big boys it's like football fa cup third round smaller teams get the chance to play the bigger teams and it means the smaller clubs get some good money out of it and that money could be what guarantees the smaller clubs survival Lee Hambleton from Sheffield

Something which tends to get overlooked is that the definitions of "professional" and "amateur" being used here are not the dictionary ones, but World Snooker's own terminology. They define the 128 players on the Tour as "professionals", and everyone else as an "amateur".
There are plenty of players, especially youngsters, who are not on the tour but are committed full-time to their Snooker career.
Si played in 7 tournaments during that season where he won prize money. He was, by dictionary definition, a full time professional.
And as a young lad starting out he had far more financial pressure than a guy with £4 million in career prize money.

Here's an idea Shaun ... how about professional snooker players refrain from being professional snooker commentators DURING the very tournament they're participating in. If you hadn't spent the previous evening session on the microphone, you might have been better prepared to beat that amateur player.

If he'd been given the choice to play a pro or amateur BEFORE the match, I wonder which he would have picked. 🤔
Maybe they should allow each player to individually commit to either being allowed to play amateurs, or never be drawn against one.
