I think its really interesting how Byleth and Dimitri's mental states somewhat mirror each other throughout most of the game.

Byleth initially comes across as this cold, dismissive loner, but in reality, she's a remarkably caring person who is unable to properly express herself, leading to people to fear her as the Ashen Demon. It's stated that she's both a great help to her students even in the earliest bits of the story, and that she also hates the Ashen Demon title because it makes her seem like a monster.

Dimitri, by contrast, has an outward appearance of a polite, outgoing noble, but is barely concealing psychotic tendencies that lie underneath his façade. Because he hates his own tendencies, he successfully suppresses and hides then from all but his closest friends.

As Byleth begins to shed her emotionless mask and becomes more openly emotional and friendly, Dimitri sheds his mask of kindness and begins to give in to his aggressive personality rather than resisting it. By the timeskip, their roles are somewhat reversed, where Byleth is visibly unnerved and saddened by Dimitri's cold and cruel personality.

Byleth's initial blunt and awkward personality still carries through in a way -- she repeatedly states to Dimitri's face that she won't give up on him, aggravating him to the point that he comes just shy of threatening to kill her in Chapter 14. Likewise, Dimitri's initial caring personality is carried over as well, just dormant; after Rodrigue's sacrifice and his attempt to leave, Byleth refuses to give up on him one final time, which finally breaks Dimitri's bitter and spiteful personality, and he's moved to tears by how his friends still accept him even after all he's done.

In a way, their unique struggles and strengths were perfectly tailored for each other at almost every point in the story, and I refuse to accept any other ship for the two in Azure Moon.

as a guy who picked m!byleth on my first playthrough (in which i did azure moon) the sheer agony i experienced when i realized i couldn't marry dimitri was indescribable

Azure moon was my first route. I well and truly had no intent to romance dimitri. But thematically, it made too much sense - you truly feel how your presence saved him. In a way the other 3 routes never really capture. Edelgard tries the same thing in all 4 routes, albeit with more guidance in in CF. Claude is Claude he's kinda just ok no matter what. But Dimitri? He is broken, a shell of a man when you find him. And in the other routes, a husk is all that remains.

Dimtri is probably the most tragic character in all of Fire Emblem. His only way to live and see through his pain, is where nearly everyone dies and more is left unsaid than not. It's one of those stories that shows that noble birth or not, you can face deeper tragedy and hatred simply for what your title is.
