Here in the U.K. I had long daily commutes on our Motorways. I practiced the Phonetic alphabet (when safe to do so of course) by reading and memorising the first three letters of any car license plate in front of me or overtaking me. I’d then say out the Phonetic names and move onto the next. If I couldn’t remember the name I’d look it up when i got to work. All this was over ten years ago but I can honestly say I know the Phonetic alphabet backwards now!

When I worked in customer service on the phone, one lady, while spelling her name, said "H" as in hell. lol

I used to work in a call center and believe me this is so useful, getting the letter right over the phone is hard.

I am about to become a drone pilot, and we must understand the international phonetic alphabet to communicate with whoever we need to. It's rare to communicate apparently with TWR but it can happen. I'll have my theory exam very soon and we must do it all the way trough without flinch. Thanks for the clarity of this video, it's really top notch and hopefully it'll save my life!

The radio (phonetic) alphabet is often mistakenly called NATO alphabet. Even though it was not created by Nato, or by the armed forces of any Nato member country. NATO has actually not even made an official decision to use this set of phonetic alphabet.

The alphabet was created jointly by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), IMO (international Maritime Organisation) and ITU (International Telecommunications Union)

Military forces have had their phonetic alphabets, but they were different from county to country. Actually, even different services of the US armed forced had their own, slightly different set of alphabet.

Being told it is commonly used by the US militany. Use it as kind of warm up exercise prior to a speech in English, especially when not having speaking English for quite some days.

Perfect. If I knew that alphabet earlier, I would have had much less trouble when it comes to spelling things out.

Thank you so much Rachel, this video was so useful! I´ve just got a job in a call center and I had a terrible first day at work because I didn't know how to spell the customers' names (From United States and Canada). Two of them even insulted me because of this :(, but I'm pretty sure I will get so much better with this video. Greetings from Nicaragua!

I am living in USA and the first I heard a customer support use "x as in word" in the phone, they didn't use the words in the video but words more common in the life.
