Your confusion is precisely WHY the question is on the ASVAB - it challenges your preconceived notions about logic.

Any time there is no clear pattern in the whole series you immediately look at every other number or every third number for an answer. It's not basic math but it's easy logic.

Genius. Getting us all to comment and show how smart we are. Well played. The algorithm is going to love this.

This is a test in the military to find out. Who's gonna hold the gun and who's gonna hold the pencil

pattern recognition, most IQ tests are full of them.

It is about pattern recognition and thinking outside of the box. There are 2 patterns in this if you pair the numbers off, it is very simple. 3, 16 is your first set. 6, 12 is next 3 doubles to 6 and 16 minus 4 is 12. This carries on the the following set. The answer is 24. The military wants to know if you can think abstractly to decipher codes.

This is a test for Cryptology. The essence of code breaking, it's what I did when I first went in. You are looking for patterns, not sensible mathematical formulations.

It's called a compound series. You can have multiple series put together and still have it be one series. It's like combining blue and red and getting purple.

Pattern recognition and logic. Gets you thinking about outside the box.

It took me all of 10 seconds to find the pattern and then answer. This question is on there for a reason, friend.

Sometimes it's not about the whole picture but your ability to tune out irrelevant information and come to the correct conclusion.

24 is the next number. The number following that is 4. The first, third, and fifth digits in the list are doubled. The 2nd, 4th, and 6th digits are subtracted by 4.

I’ve always been bad with the patterns like this unless it just jumps out at me. These are questions I usually skip and come back to. It’s cool to learn that there are common patterns that these tests tend to use.

I hated school and they hated me, but this stuff jumps off the page for me. I got a 98 on the ASVAB. :)

This is probably why I got a perfect score on my ASVAB, my ADD brain immediately saw two series before trying to make sense of a single series outcome.

That is testing more than your math skills sir that is pattern recognition, some people can tell just by looking at the question it’s alternating series

Recruiters should use this question to explain what a career in the military is like. It’s perfect.

"Find the next number in a series" types of questions are always trick questions. To practice these, figure out the techniques and try them. 2 or 3 series inter woven is a common theme. multiply and subtract. Adding 2 previous numbers together (like fibbonicci sequence) but you can also subtract, multiply these and more. There are some that are impossible to figure out but learning a few basic things to try will often land on the right solution immediately. It literally took me only like 15 seconds to sort this one out and part of that is I guessed correctly at the start. That's luck but practice helps improve your luck.

36 years ago, I got a perfect score on the ASVAB. But this question had me stumped. Best I could guess is that it was two different series, d. 24.

Pattern recognition is important for many things in the military. This includes alternating patterns such as this. Those can be used for coding messages. Someone skilled in such pattern recognition can help to decode enemy communications.
