Part I of Aerial Montenegro, exploring the beautiful Kotor Bay and Old Town from the streets and from the skies.

Originally part of the ancient Roman province of Dalmatia, Kotor was shaped by 400 years of Venetian rule before becoming part of Austria until after WWI. Work on the city walls, shown here in aerial drone footage, was first started in the 9th Century, with a defensive loop completed around the city by the 14th Century. Work was ongoing on the fortifications until as late as the 19th Century, while St. John's Fortress sits 260m above sea level at the top, providing the perfect lookout for the surrounding region.

Also featured in the video is St. Mary's Collegiate Church, built in 1221 on the site of a 6th Century basilica, which inside includes a glass coffin of the Blessed Osanna of Cattaro, who died 1565. Osanna was an "anchoress", someone whose commitment and dedication to their faith led them to be voluntarily imprisoned in a small cell attached to a church, so as to dedicate their life to prayer.

Kotor is also famously known as the city of cats, with an abundant number of strays roaming the city's medieval streets. Descendent from seafaring rat-catchers, the cats of Kotor are revered and cared for by the locals, much like the cats in Instanbul, meaning most are friendly, curious, and cuddly – even if a little scruffy.

Aerial drone video and photography shot on Mavic Pro 2 in March 2022.
Additional filming on Samsung S21 Ultra and an old skool Sony compact.
