I had the same feeling about the variants. It's basically 50/50 good thing/bad thing happens to you. The expansions are much better than the core box variants. And I love that I can get all three expansions into the little core box.

I can see myself house ruling the variants to make them more balanced. Having to declare which nebula the tri-nebula is upon discovery and being able to repair your ship at any of your own colonies. Also it might be fun if you can use black holes to slingshot and change direction when you move but it damages your ship in the process.

I really wanted to join the Kickstarter for this, but, out of a job so strapped for cash.
Still wanna buy this game at some point.
Seems like easy to learn hard to master.

Sometimes average is good, especially when bringing new players in, simple easy to play. But with the KS lots of expansions which should help flesh the game out.
